I see. Sort of like that irritating "type ahead" that microsux does when using their expensive, bloated office programs. But in this case, you make your own. Very clever. Tell more.

Someone will have made or demonstrate an astrolabe... (or whatever!). Next.
Or
The use of a plumb bob and square to make a level..
5000 years ago the use light - lines of sight - From stick to stick - to make straight lines (lines of sight) when they didn't understand light and eyes and thought the eyes projected beams to see. E.g. many temples and other monuments were accurately aligned to sun, stars, etc.

Fascinating!

After lot of reading .
The difference between a Astrolabe and Sextant is not a lot.

The Sextant when first invented used the ocean for leavel. The Astrolabe used a type of plumbob.
But later with the Sextant the a spirit level and some a mercy mirror type. The Russian even used gyro type.

Just holding a machinist Level each line is 0.05 or 0.5 seconds.

The Navy say the Navigator can get 1½miles.
My Phone GPS is less than 10 feet. Which only use just see how ot works. I still use thd modern-day in-hand-navigation system aka . 🌟 Hight lite between brackets for answer {- old fashione paper map printed of the computer-}.

The other uses for Sextant or Astrolabe is fine the Hight of buildings.

I also found out why almost any say to they took reading a high noon 🕛 . Easier Calculation of location then DEAD RECKONING till next day at high noon.

Then it fun build one for ship engine and ship I plan building.

I also you a sundial for longitude and a good watch. A Sextant/Astrolabe will also work but more Calculation. I do have few slide rules if do not cheat and did not have a print book with tables.

Just keeping life simple.
Have any you thing of buildings to make life simpler
