I've been working on a Henrici hot air engine build and what started as a 3" x 3" x 5" block of cast iron is now a power cylinder.

I'm just amazed by the amount of swarf created in making this part...

(Note, the tray is about 2 ft long)

Hi Ved

It would be nice to know more about your project? Is it from your plans or from someone else?

I purchased a pair of 12" flywheel castings that someday I hope to turn into a full sized Heinrici engine.

By the way; the cast iron swarf is good on the grass or in the garden.

It's casting kit from Meyer's Castings.

Unlike my earlier builds, I'm not really documenting this one. The build is going very slowly (6+ months now) considering available time, my patience level at any one time, and issues with substandard castings and getting those replaced. (I eventually contacted Clarence Meyers directly and got replacements. I hope their quality control has improved since.)

I'm probably about 75% done. I only have a few components left to make. I haven't yet bolted or soldered/welded a single piece together. And as anyone who has ever built a stirling knows, getting these damned things to run can take 10-20% of the entire build time getting the close fit tolerances, friction reduction, etc.

I believe that the cast iron swarf is good for lemon trees as well. Occasionally had people call into work to get a container of swarf from the power hacksaw for use on their lemon trees.

Paul.
