Myford's metal lathes

So can plain bearings used back to the turn of the century. My old Drummond with parallel bronze bushings and my ML7 with parallel white metal bearings will both turn out work within half a thou or less. It's all in how you set them up and how you use them.

The conical Super 7 bearing system is also good for over 2000 rpm. ;-)

Every ME with a Myford thinks his Sow's Ear is a Silk Purse, they're mostly over priced for what they are.
Funny that, since as a breed MEs tend to be tighter than a gnat's chuff

Around here (southern Ontario, Canada) most Myfords seem to come on the market as part of a ME's estate clearance. I've seen Myfords offered for a few hundred to many thousands of dollars. Conditions vary from rusted junk to almost unused. You just have to decide what you want and what you are willing to pay and then wait. Twenty years ago I probably overpaid for my almost unused S7B (gearbox and power crossfeed) but I haven't regretted it. There is something humbling to see the work of other MEs and realize that they used the same equipment as you except with much greater skill.

Well this is the UK News of today- apart from D-Day 75 of which I sort of missed the big event and got in a gap between it and Korea but someone gave me a Veterans Badge and after 70 years, HM Government gave me a decent pair of hearing aids - for playing with sweating ammunition left over from WW2!

But back to the other news. We in the UK have a population of some 60 million of which about 40 million are of 'working age' and according the UK Banks half of them have agreed bank overdraft facilities and they simply don't know how many are debts which are- not agreed.


If the rest of the Press report that the average wealth of a. UK citizen is a mere £450 or so, how the blazes can most of us do model engineering anyway.
On a more cheerful note, I found an advert for an old Myford ML7 for the delightful sum of £495

Does this mean that whoever buys it will have spent his or hers total wealth?

I''m having a whimsical break as I am now in a National Health Service backlog for someone to stick a hypodermic needle in my better eye. On that score, I have been paying into the NHS since it started with Lord Beveridge in 1948 when my wet behind the ears were blown in .

If moderators find me a bit grumpy at times, I claim either insanity for putting up with things so long.. But I haven't got dementia yet- but still cannot afford a decent new lathe.

It's raining and cold for Flaming June with a threat yet again of high winds and thunderstorms... Obviously, we can't afford proper seasons now.

I traded continuous dismal cold weather of the UK for the occasional earthquake here in NZ. Earthquakes certainly catch your attention but the climate is far better! My vision of a good Brexit would be to tow the UK down south to around about the Azores latitude and then I might consider coming back.

This reminds me that many years ago when I worked for a German oil rig supply boat company, they had serious plans to tow icebergs from the Antarctic to the Persian Gulf. The appearance of industrial water desalination plants put paid to those plans!

Those desalination plants produced "water" that tasted awful until you chilled it then it tasted ok, perhaps the ice would have been a good idea after all. I think that I drank quite a lot of beer, but can't remember that well.

Don't know about the beer, but sidiqi was quite good at dulling the senses!
Oh, and the by-product of the desalination plants was electricity.
