Harrogate Show, UK. 7th to 9th May

Nice meeting up with known and unknown faces. Thanks to John [bogs] for some fine grating magnetic packers [ or whatever they are called ] A couple of the lads at the Chester meet I did know, some were new to me like John Rudd and Rob Wilson. Saw Rich and Julian earlier just to swap insults...

    Bogs bites the bullet, again.

Those gears look funny John. The 30 tooth looks OK but the 60 looks to have an odd tooth form, for a start from the pic's it deeper than the 30 but number of teeth don't matter, the depth should be constant. ???? John S.

    A Knurl Pitch Chart

So your diameter is 0.308 when you start with the tips of the knurl just touching, What is the diameter at the root when the knurl is finished. After all the tips are now at a lesser diameter than 0.308" Can you explain this then? A steel shaft turned down with steps of random diameter then...

    Positioning a heavy Tailstock

I did that some years ago with the tailstock off a big facing lathe. This was that big that for normal work the operator wouldn't even bolt it down !! I had it lifted off with the crane and drilled four holes front to middle and back to middle with a long drill so they met up in the middle...

    A World Gone Mad

Somebody is pulling their plonker. Why just brass, why not all metals and what stops the scrappy from cutting his dainty paws ? No saying they haven't had a visit but many of these people are untrained and you need to jump on them and demand they prove everything. they soon back down. .

    Free shaper and mill plans

Not unless there are some under a bench somewhere as an unfinished project. Ivan Law who owns Model Engineering Services [ the guy who wrote Gears and Gearcutting ] ran out and didn't want to stock anymore with the influx of cheap Chinese machines. A lot could be fabricated and possibly use...

    Deburring wheels

They are brilliant at de-burring and quick, as Doc says spendy so after I had worn two away at £35 each from J&L I bought a pack of scotchbrite pads at £8 for 10 on offer. I use 5 pads cut with scissors to a circle and clamped up between two plywood formers. Every so often I have to grind the...

    Your most useless tool?

This is going to be one of those one man's meat is another man's poison. What really brought this home to me was a thread on another forum about a shop table pocket book. I have made my own putting pages in one of those laminated folder books. The first and last page are decimal equivalents so...

    Your most useless tool?

For me it was a co-ax indicator, I spent that much time winding the table down, fitting the co-ax, locating centre, removing and winding the table up to drill or bore that it was time to put the clocks back. John S.
