i was wondering what it would take to run an ic engine on propane.what needs to be changed,or altered to use the bottled gas verses coleman fuel of other liquid fuel, got my powerhouse running on coleman fuel but not to good and was wondering about trying bottled gas. thanks jonesie

I changed a ordinary Honda 800w generator to run on butane. All I had to do was to mount the automatic regulator to a little hole in the intake, just after the carburettor. This is vacuum controlled so the regulation of the speed is still done by the original linkages. Nothing was destroyed so it can go back to gasoline by just plugging the hole.

Hi Jonesie,
I believe that in order to run an engine efficiently on pressurized bottle gas, the carburetor venturi is required to be a larger size than when using standard liquid fuel. Also, obviously some type of pressure regulator should be utilized in the delivery set up. Also the length of the intake runner can get to be a problem that is caused by the refrigeration action of the gas. Perhaps a bit of 'fiddling' with your current fuel delivery system would yield better performance rather than attempting to re-invent the wheel and a whole new set of problems to sort out.

I've seen Propane used on these small engines without need of much more than a demand valve. Model engine carbs tend to be sensitive and small adjustments can make large changes. Chances are you'd not need to change the carb, but a demand valve is requireded. One local guy runs gasoline, coleman fuel or propane on one of his engines with the same carb although the mixture settings are widely different.

That's exactly the type of valve in my generator except for the size. Now I know the name of the thing :big: :big:
