hi all,

Firstly I am a newbie.
I am wondering if someone will be able to guide me to the right direction.

I have bought a small tap with the writing on the package as 8/32 . the place where I bought it sell this tap quite expensive. I am trying to find the same item on ebay but when I search the 8/32 tap it came up with 8-32 tap.

My question is : is 8/32 tap same as 8-32 tap?

Thanks

regards,

Durn tootin' it is! If you are looking for a tapping drill, however, try a #29 or a 3.5mm!

I will, however, give you the same advice I give any and every Aussie who is new to the hobby - Forget the American UNf/UNC threads and go either BA (British Association) or metric. You will find either much easier to access in this country and all you need to do is get hold of an equivalents (approximation) chart - plenty of those floating around on the interweb!

Gotta agree with Tel.....when in Rome er ah when downunder...do as the Aussie's do!

Don't torture yourself with hard to find hardware....doing all this can be hard enough.. ;D

You apparently have an #8-32 tap, which is one of the standard US machine screw sizes. The #8 is the diameter, according to the formula D = 0.060 + (0.013 x N) where N is the screw number. The 32 is the threads per inch.

Thank you for all the replies.

yes, I wish I don't have to follow the size and go with the more common one as you guys suggested.

Reason I go with the size mentioned is becuase I am trying to tap a hole for fuel barb (which the thread comes with the thread 8/32) - not sure if this is the term for it. it is a brass valve where we stick plastic tubing to for fuel to go into.

I went to Hobby Rama (this is the only place around) where I can find this item. If there anywhere else I can shop (online) in Australia. it will be much appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Hi Gents, I'd welcome some advice on metric and BA threads. A steam dome on my QR A-10 5" guage calls for 4BA studs w/- nuts in stainless....not exactly a common item.
Thought I'd substitute with 4mm x 0.7 stainless but I'm not happy with the thread fit with the nut...its a bit sloppy. Anyone else found this with metric threads?
