I uploaded a video of my No. 3/2024 Hit & Miss engine "Musa-Retrol HM 01) today.
Unfortunately, the file is too large to show directly here.



I have slightly enlarged the central bore in the carburetor so that the engine can be operated with the cap closed in miss mode. To run at full speed and continuous ignition, you only need to move the blocking lever for the breaker and open the throttle cap a little.The engine starts very easily.

The engine runs with a mains connection for the ignition, but can also be switched to battery power.

That is an impressively slow engine in hit-and-miss mode, especially for a small engine.
Everything is finished out very nicely !

Yes, I like it very much. But I had a few problems with the contact ignition at first. These original contact plates were very difficult to set so that the ignition was triggered at the right time. I removed these contacts and fitted a microswitch. I also fitted a holder with an adjusting screw to the control rod of the exhaust valve. This allows the ignition timing to be set very precisely.

If you want to retain the vintage look, you could crack one microswitch open and mount the internals on a phenolic piece. Not sure if that is a "Schnapsidee" :) At least it would not be too expensive to have a look what is inside. :cool:

Whether I use an open switch, Hall sensor or micro switch on a model motor like this doesn't really matter to me. What counts for me is the safe function at the end of the assembly.

Other owners of the HM 01 engine had the same problems. These two original reeds can only be adjusted correctly by bending them. However, this can only be done when the engine has been removed.

You have to make compromises with such small engines. I don't think anyone would install a magneto ignition on this scale.


On another motor there are two Spring contacts, or a Hall sensor.

I had some problems logging back into this forum, these problems seem to have been resolved as far as I can tell so far.
So I can continue.
I installed a second homepage a few years ago. It is only the Bosch-Combi system from the late 50s until about the end of the 70s of the last century.

I have two of these lathes. Unfortunately, the cross slide was missing from the last machine I bought, which I reproduced from the original slide.

I have visited before, many times, your Bosch-combi pages; and other pages related! I liked a lot the story of re-building the cross-slide!

I have a Bosch lathe (green one) - somehow complete, except motor bracket and chuck - and I would like to fix it in time.
What can you say in addition about its ability for machining metal - soft and medium hardness? Can you compare it with others? Have you thought of simple means to improve sturdiness?
Let's say an additional smaller rod to obtain a framed construction/support for cross-slide, or even linear (ball) bearing?
What would you advise for a chuck adaptation?

The original lathe chucks are no longer available, nor are any spare parts for the Bosch-Combi lathe. The lathe chucks from a Proxxon PD 250 E have approximately the same dimensions. However, you will then need an adapter to hold the chuck.
I have adapted a four-jaw lathe chuck from Proxxon for my second lathe with the replica cross slide. The three-jaw chuck from Proxxon should also fit on the adapter.
This type of machine is a mechanic's lathe. The work offset is only carried out with the cross slide and the top slide. The bed slide is only roughly adjusted and tightened. It is not intended to move the bed slide during work.
On the second lathe, I have attached a support under the face slide carrier at the front. This ensures that the cutting edge of the lathe chisel remains in the middle of the longitudinal axis when it is moved.

I have also already adapted a Chinese lathe chuck.
Nice lathe 10" swing .
Good looking chuck.


In November 2023 I sold old larger lathe and down sized to about that size mini lathe.
Found out mini lathes are a good lathe . Easy to move around only 84 pounds [ 38 KG]
Yours is is even lighter.

Yes, I have enjoyed long travels of top slide/cross slide. They are larger than usual for lathe's reference dimensions.
The lathe is indeed a light(er) construction! And configurable to space available. Of course most pictures show it at maximum extent!

regarding your question about processing different materials.

The Bosch lathe can be used to machine all materials used in modelling. It is possible to machined steel, brass, bronze, aluminium and plastics. Of course, wood can also be machined.
In terms of size, it is roughly comparable to the Emco Compact 5. However, the Bosch lathe has a considerably higher centre height. With a longer guide tube, it even has a much greater centre width.
