Hi, I am going to need a sight glass oiler for my 1/4 scale Galloway. The one I am looking at has 3/16-40 MTP threads. It sells for around $20.00, and I have no problem with that. The fly in the ointment is that a 3/16-40 MTP tap costs around $40.00,and that is a bit much.

Is there a way to modify the threads on the oiler, maybe by using a standard 3/16-40 die on the threads, so that it will thread into a standard 3/16-40 hole? Will it work without modifying the threads at all? I have never used a taper thread before so this is all new to me.

Does any one know of a source for a similar oiler with standard threads? Thanks in advance, John.

Try PM Research.

I would draw your attention to the Info page about threads

Where they say the tapered threads and straight threads are interchangeable.

Or you could make your own from scratch. An American style 1/4 scale kit can be purchased from M & M for not a lot of money and the drawings will be useful for future projects.

Just take it apart and remake the central part with whatever thread you want or why not make the whole oiler, that is what I usually do.

Do your engine drawings not show an oiler, the 1/3rd ones do.
