Ok, I started the lathe with the chuck still in it. Yes, that's a stupid thing to do. It wasn't spinning very fast, and the overload cut in. This has happened before when the tool has dug in. Just turn it off and on again and it resets.
This time it didn't. Lite comes on, I can hear it click of when I hit the big red button or lift the safety switch. Is this BAD???
Anyone been here???
Michael

I must be missing something here, you started the lathe with the chuck still in it, isn't that how it works all the time.

Paul.

so when you press the green button, it clicks and the green light goes on? or does the yellow light go on?

if the green button does not click and just feels like its doing nothing you have no power coming in. if the green light comes on, but you get no power, you could have a few things wrong.
if the yellow light comes on right away, i dont know what is up. maybe you left the speed knob all the way up? how did you leave the key in if you still have the safety thing on it? maybe the safety switch got damaged? i removed mine because it was always in the way when i was machining large pieces, and in general was in the way, and have learned to never remove my hand from the key until i am done and it is back on the bench. to remove the switch you need to unplug the lathe and remove the front cover, and unplug the switch and pull the wires through and take the switch off. you need to make a little jumper to go between the two points where the switch used to connect so that the lathe will turn on.

So I pulled the cover of, checked the mosfets switches fuses etc. all good. The safety switch is operational but the guard is removed. There seemed to be an issue with the switch, the main on off switch. The safety switch is wired into the main switch, controlling a relay in main switch. That seemed to be the problem but not sure how I fixed it. There was also a tiny piece of paper thin metal across the riser pins to speed control board that I removed but that seems unlikely to be related to me leaving chuck key in. I am not sure if this is much use to anyone with similar problems in the future. And yes it's best not to leave the key in, or rush, or work late at night.
