I don't contribute much to this site and I've been a regular daily viewer for over 7 years now but when a friend of mine in oz sent me this link concerning the posting of pictures from smart phones and the like I immediately thought of you guy's,

I have no way of knowing whether this is true or not and don't know how one would find out but I think members here should be aware of the pitfalls of posting pictures,

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I just tried this with a photo I took in New Hampshire. I used a Canon SX10 Camera. I didnt see any GPS info on it. I tried using photos taken from my smart phone, and still no GPS coordinates. My Guess is the author is using a camera with GPS on. You can turn this off.

EDIT: This camera doesnt have gps on it. My phone does though, despite it being old.

Yes this is very true. It is more for smartphones then regular cameras. But could change as technology changes and becomes cheaper.
Check the setting of your phone, you can turn the GPS option off for pictures. It used to be set to on by default, but that might of changed.

It very important to warn your kids about this this. The only site that I know of the deletes this GPS info is Facebook. I have tried it with my own photos. But there are too many other sites that don't.

Here is a web site I use to check to see weather the GPS info is imbedded in the picture. You can use pictures from your hard drive or web sites. http://regex.info/exif.cgi

Plenty of cameras out there with GPS, it's not just phones.

Almost any device with GPS capability can be tracked and its location discovered. Not just phones, cameras and tablets. Actually a similar thing can be done with your web site browsing. Scary isn't it. :hDe::hDe::hDe:

Shades of big brother...
Oh that happened in 1995 with Windows 95. The first operating system that knew how to phone home.

I recently upgraded to an iphone, they cost a small fortune here in Australia, for a 32GB phone the cheapest plan from my provider is $83 per month for 24 months. Anyway, I noticed that when I downloaded photos to my ipad from the phone, the location where they were taken is automatically in the title.

Location probably helps when you are on a travelling holiday, saves trying to guess where the photo was taken.

Paul.
