HI all I needed to lock the head up on my lath as i don't like drilling in to the lathe its self to attach things I came up with this on my lathe which is a compact 8 their is a bracket to mount the gear wheals on to drive the led screw so this was my starting point I got a peace of steel plate 3mm thick by 80mm long by 28mm wide drilled two 6.2mm holes on the center line 15mm from the top and the same from the bottom. I then got sum steel rod with a OD of 13mm by 100mm long I drilled this out to 8.8mm by 50mm deep then reamed out to 9mm drilled the lat 50mm 4.8 then reamed that out to 5mm. then i silver soldered the top tube on to the fixing plate I then started work on the locking pin I got sum stainless steel rod with a OD of 10mm
turned it dawn to be a snug fit in to the 9mm reamed hole I then turned dawn the back of the locking pin for the spring to go over I then drilled and taped this m5. the 9mm part of the pin is 15mm long I then put a slot in the front of the 9mm part to fit the tooth that wood engage on to the head stock gear silver soldered that in place I then thread locked a length of 5mm rod to the locking pin and the back of the 5mm rod was taped 5mm by 30 long I then made up the locking pin sparser and handle out of tufnol the spacer was taped m5 but the handle I taped m8 to fit m8 studding that was taped m5 right piks

It appears that you are using the drive gear for the leadscrew as the locking pawl plate. In my opinion that is a bad idea, repeated use will ding the gear teeth, then maybe you turn the lathe on while the pawl in engaged, damaging a couple teeth which of course then damage the reversing gear teeth. The possible damage far exceeds the positive features of having a spindle locking plate. IMO

My monarch has such a feature, it has its own pawl plate, and a microswitch the prevents the lathe from operating while the lock is engaged.

HI well as mine dus not have a switch for when the cover is open i just remove the belt so if i do forget to switch off all 3 switches it still wont turn the head
