A friend sent me a link last night for a "Forment Engine". This engine was the first electric engine design to use the rotating armature design that we so easily take for granted these days.

These kits can be ordered from "The Old Model Company" in the UK.

Kewl beenz!

This is a predecessor of the one I remember which had an even number of bar magnets around the armature with the polarities reversed one to the next. The electromagnet was switched in much the same way but rather than shutting off, it reversed polarity with a short "dead zone" while the magnet passed over the pole pieces. It was reversed by simply reversing the electromagnet's polarity relative to the bar magnets' positions.

The problem I saw with it is the same as with the Forment (Hmmm ... isn't that how they make wine? :D) Engine, that being when a magnet stops exactly at bottom dead center. My solution to that was two sets of electromagnets spaced either a bit more than or a bit less than the distance between bar magnets so that it would be impossible for there to be one stopped over each of them. This with the switching to allow the engine to be reversable lead to a switching mess, the twitch from which my brain care specialist says will pass in time. :D

Okay, that should bore everyone to tears.

Best regards,

Kludge
