Not engine related but I'm pleased with the outcome. Have built a couple more engines but seem to be losing my ability to achieve close tolerances.
Decided to go back to basics and machine some fun things like hammer, bullets, trapped nut & spirals. Got a set of plans for a chess set. Decided in Brass & Stainless. Brass worked out ok, but Stainless I had several failures due to work hardening, so changed to Aluminum. All went ok except for the weight difference. I did give up on sticking to the exact measurements and machined them my way.
How do you stop work hardening ?.

Nice work
This is what I was told, and it works for me, but I am by no means an expert .
Make sure the cutting tools are always sharp.
Do not dwell the tool in one position.
Run at the recommended feeds and speeds for the material being machined. If these are incorrect, tool rubbing will increase heat. Use coolant if possible.
I'm not as knowledgeable as some of the others on this site. They will undoubtedly weigh in, and we may both gain knowledge.

G'Day Kpar,
Great looking set that you have made.
I have a 12 yo grandson that is becoming interested in chess & I thought that I should turn a set for him.
Where did you obtain the drawings?
Once again well done.
Regards,
Don.

Don, I do have some PDF files that I followed (not exactly though) I can't seem to save them into a single file.
If I knew how I could send the printable files by PM or maybe E-Mail.

Hi Kpar,
A really good looking project.

As for the weight difference you could? if the bases have a hole drilled as in the PDF, fill the aluminium holes with lead. I doubt it will be equal weight but narrow the difference a bit. Lead is easy to melt, just make sure work area is well ventilated if you do this.
OR. Safer, turn a steel plug and Loktite it in the holes?? Not as near as lead will get you tho.
Just a thought.
