Here are a couple of links to sources of supply in the US, along with a couple of interesting sites.
Its called a electronics work bench but it would work for a modeling bench if you have to work in your house spare room or an apartment
http://davehylands.com/Wood-Working/Electronics-Workbench/
It is totally customizable inside it and outside to make it look presentable. Or even better yet a hobby bench for the wifey. and you don't need be a master woodworker to build it .
This one has some sections on making thinks move with cranks, levers etc. plus some interesting things.
http://automata.co.uk/mechanisums.htm
This one is also fun just in case you want to age the model you have made this might com in handy.http://www.rustyiron.com/engines/electrolysis/index.html
This one may have that much needed stock, I have not dealt with them but was told they are pretty good.http://www.farmers-copper.com/
This one has a number of PDF based Down loadable catalogs
Of tools, books, base metals etc. Down load the contents list first the the catalogs they have a mind numbing assortment of shapes and metals including some of the hard to find in small quantities.
Just a hint:Nickel silver Sheet, Wire, Circles; Iron & Steel:
Circles, Squares, Wire, Tool Steel, Kirksite; Squares,
Circles, Wire, Wire Forms, Chain, Cable, Mesh;
Surgical Steel: Body Jewelry,
Titanium:Sheet, Wire, Screws,
Bolts, Washers, Nuts; Soldering Supplies; Pewter: Sheet, Wire, Casting Alloy,

what is nice you don't have to down load the whole catalog at once, but in the sections you want. the tool section is good too.
Here is a pretty good source for some foundry supplies and information.http://foundry101.com/
