    Screwless vise woes

Best thing to do is junk the little pin and make one long enough to go through from one side to the other. These vices are very useful but are a pain, as supplied, because the teeny little pin keeps coming out of its slot when you loosen the screw, but having a long pin solves the problem. Ned

    Slitting saw advice

Hi Stan, A word of warning when ganging thin slitting saws, they can spread! The voice of experience here, unfortunately, once I was putting a screwdriver/coin slot in some Pre-war dashboard mounted fuse holders and ganged two blades together to get the required width. Lo and behold I ended up...

    Machining Wood?

Hi Guys, Milling wood is easy, just use your normal HSS end mills /slot drills. There is much less chance of burning the wood on the mill, compared to using a router,as the speeds are more sympathetic. Mills are also much quieter than a router and the X,Y and Z control makes accurate sizing a...

Thinks! I wonder how many of those will be made in the next few weeks? Ned

    Myford Closing

Before any of you chaps start the long trip to Myford this weekend, there is a rumour that the sale is off as the stock has been bought by a dealer. A friend posted this info on the ME site but it has now disappeared, perhaps the w**ker in charge at that forum is more paranoid than was first...

    Garden watering ....

Hi Ksor, If you can find a plastic watering can made by "HAWS", they are far superior to the cheap, nasty, utter cr*p that garden centres try to pass of as a useful item. We have two Haws, they must be at least twenty years old by now and still going strong. They spend all year outside in the...

    Cutting Small Threads- Single Point

The use of a feeler gauge is inspired, well done that man. Now, when do we see you single point the nuts? :big: Ned

    Round headed bolts

Hi Guys, When faced with a rusted bolt and you do get it to move DON'T go yippee and try to continue to turn it if it is still reluctant to move freely. It is better to work it backwards and forwards, while applying lube. till it starts to move more in the un-do direction. Quite often you get...

    Left hand thread

Hi Ken, I agree a terrible idea, not sound engineering practice at all, but you know these woodworker types and it does work. Ned

Another Reason to buy or make a diamond tool holder

Hi Guys, I thought you might like to see another version of the Tangential tool that was made by a friend of mine. Ned

    Left hand thread

Hi Guys, I don't think that both left and right handed threads in wood lathe attachments is that common, I have only come across it on Graduate (1 1/2" by 6TPI) lathe, first available this side of the pond I seem to recall, from APTC on their self centring four jaw. It seems to work quite well...

    Smooth cuts??

Hi Andrew, Out of curiosity, where did you get the advice to have your top slide at such a strange angle? Most people would suggest it is at right angles to the cross slide, although some recommend 3 or 6 degrees, to get a very fine in-feed. Others suggest you move the top slide around to 30ish...

    Hand Eye Coordination

I have never failed to be amazed at what some individuals are capable of achieving, but these people seem to be so very accurate that I suspect there is some level of electronic assistance. If such level of accuracy can be gained, why is it that Darts players can't hit treble twenty every time...

    Reaming Bronze

Hi Ken, If you are taking out 1/128in you will have to be very careful that the flutes are not getting stuffed full of swarf. As you can imagine the slightest excess will cause the reamer to rub and not cut which will just generate heat and soften your reamer, which is most likely made of carbon...

    Boring Bar question

Hi Dean, I am surprised that no one has mentioned making a "D" bit of the right size. With one of these very easily made tools you can achieve both an accurate diameter and straight hole and have a flat bottom too. Ned

    Blow lamps

Hi Rich, although "firebird" does seem appropriate, If you want to buy Paraffin, try your local Homebase look in the gardening section. They sell or at least used to sell it for greenhouse heaters. Nowadays it is only sold in "pre-packed" form not "loose" as you and I remember, Oh the good old...

    Milling HSS?

Hi Guys, Contrary to popular opinion you can mill HSS with a solid carbide end mill. One of our club members did so recently. I seem to recall him saying it was fairly easy but obviously care was taken to avoid too many shock loads which would have broken the end mill. The old timers at the club...

Help with screw cutting on a myford

Hi Rich, Arnold beat me to it. As for, Arnold never mind about a "to do" list get on and make one, you wont regret it. If anyone is interested, the inserts that I am using are Glanze partial form Metric inserts, by which they mean that it only cuts the valley. If you have full form inserts they...
