variable speed motor on a myford

Steamer: The folks on the Logan boards say the same thing about converting the varidrives to variable speed motors. You still need a mechanical speed reduction between the motor and spindle.

    Flux for silver braze

Just to add to the confusion, when working with copper based alloys (brass and bronze) you can use Sil-Fos (2% to 15% silver and 1200F to 1400F) without any flux. The phosphorous in the rod acts as a flux. Sil-Fos is only a fraction of the price of the high silver content silver solders and...

    lathe chuck grease

I beg to differ on chuck lubrication. In my opinion, the continual rubbing of steel on steel in a scroll chuck is machine abuse. To avoid an argument, I will not comment on my choice of lubricants but there are many available. If you have trouble with your chuck throwing oil, then I assume...

Cutting curves in flywheel without rotary table

The spoke area of a flywheel is relatively thin so you lay it out and cut out the waste with a jeweler's saw or for faster cutting use an ordinary fret saw with coarse teeth. Aluminum is easy to cut with any of the woodworking tools.

Still learning about myself - a funny story

As age makes you stupider and electronics become more complicated confusion reigns. The instruction to push three times and hold the button down for five seconds is quickly overlooked in the instruction book. Everything electronic used to come with multiple buttons and switches, now it comes...

Steam Verses Diesel On the Horseshoe Curve

Noiteon: The green people have been using that argument for years. If it is valid, then burning coal is also carbon neutral since it was once plant life.

    Which vise?

Too large a vise can be as much of a pain as one too small. It can restrict the Y travel and be in the way of the Y handwheel. All small mills have restricted space between the table and spindle so stay with a low vise and avoid the rotating base that take up a lot of headroom.

Making a Face Parallel to a Bore

You didn't provide much detail so I will make a couple of comments guessing on your project. If you are making two bearing blocks for a shaft with what is usually referred to as a running fit, they have to line up very accurately. If it is one block with a long shaft sticking out the bore and...

Steam Verses Diesel On the Horseshoe Curve

If they got the stack emissions down to EPA standards they wouldn't have enough power to leave the water stop.

Pipe threads - threading tips anyone ?

Just to clarify John's suggestion. In North American grocery stores, lard is animal fat. It used to be rendered out with heat but now is just squeezed out in an extruder. Shortening is made from vegetable oils from multiple sources and is usually hydrogenated. As an aside: Tallow is made from...

    A Proper Keyway

Rick: I am just amazed that you have only.0005" runout on the end of a end mill in a little import mill. I haven't used a lot of hobby type machines, but that is impressive.

    A Proper Keyway

The big question is, did you cut it with a 3/16" cutter or did you cut it narrow and then widen to spec.

    a different lathe taper attachment?

Petertha: Yes, that is my original post on the subject. The bearing I used is a Thompson pillow block with recirculating balls. It should be used on a hardened and ground shaft but I use a piece of 1" 4140 because I had it...

    a different lathe taper attachment?

Here is a picture of the one I made for my Logan 10 x 24. I used a 1" linear bearing because that is what I had on the shelf. If starting from scratch, I would fine a used bar and track of a CNC machine. I posted the build of this a long time ago so you may be able to find it with a search.

    SOLD Enco mill/drill SOLD

When I saw your ad I was tempted to post the usual comment that 'you cant do decent work on one of those imported round column mills' but decided that a potential buyer might take it seriously. I patiently wait to see what quality of work you produce on a better mill.

Sidney 16 or Does anyone use big lathes here?

If your model engine needs a 18" flywheel, it is not big enough.

    Rudy Kouhoupt Stirling Engines

I am completely lost on that comment. How do you heat the air inside the hot cap if the hot cap is not conducting heat? Granted, SS will conduct some heat but require a much larger flame than a better conducting material. There is no real problem to heat isolate one component from adjacent parts.

    QCTP Again

I can see you mass producing tool holders at work where you have bigger machines. I found ten to be the bare minimum to not be changing tools all the time. Don't forget to make one as a universal holder for a dial indicator. You will never go back to a magnet base after having one on the tool post.

    How to paint/highlight dials?

I had little success with the 'paint and sand' method but the engraving company who did work for me did it all the time. I attributed their success to the shape and depth of the groove their engraving machine made rather than a simple V groove that I was making.
