I've been reading about Joseph Clement , a machine tool pioneer who worked with/for Charles Babbage. In 1827 Clement won an award for his "self-adjusting double-driving centre chuck".

Can't find much on the web about it.

Any idea what one of those is /might be?

Just curious, thanks in advance.

OK, we give up! What is a self-adjusting double-driving centre chuck? ;)

??? That's left me just as iggernant, about what it is, as I was before.
;)

Interesting reading, anyways. Sounds like 180 years ago Joseph Clement had a lot of influence on modern machine tools.

<rubs chin & smiles...> I'm now even more iggernant than I wuz : now I dont know what a two-armed driver is. Cant really post a "whats a 2 armed driver " question...

Sounds like a face plate with two driving bolts in it instead of one. You'd use a two-armed dog to drive the work.

Just guessin' ::)
