Hi all. I was wondering if it is possible to grind a 20 tpi thread on the end of a 3/16 hss endmill. I tried single point turning with a 55 deg carbide bit but it just pushes the mill away barely making a scratch. I was wondering if there is a 55 or 60 deg. diamond wheel available that i could use in a dremel mounted on the tool post.
Thanx in advance
Herbie ???

Herbie,

Cheaper to buy a new one at ALLTOOLS Sherrifs Rd Lonsdale, unless of course your really like a challenge ;D

Best Regards
Bob

A Dremel is a hobby tool, there is nothing precision about it. The tiny bushings amd 1/8" shaft are perfect for the job it was designed to do. If you want to grind threads a Toolpost grinder would be the tool to use. You would need a angle dresser to dress the wheel to the thread profile then grind away.

Im interested too

It will be nice to found some small 60° diamon wheel to grind precision threads like the ones in micrometers etc....

Saludos

It is more than grinding a 60° Vee that makes a precision thread. The leadscrew/rack gear that moves the grinding head or visa-virsa, that moves the workhead has to have standards of pitch lenght that are equal to the degree of accuracy desired. The wheel needs to be dressed to the profile of the thread, not just a 60° angle, specific root width, crown width, depth. A Ebay 60° cutter is not the tool.

Threads like the OP wants are capable on a lathe with a TP grinder and a correctly dressed wheel, threads for a micrometer are a different story altogether.
