The Western Engine and Model Exhibition will be held for the second time this year in Vallejo,CA.

My wife and I are thinking of attending and making a mini-vacation out of it.

My question is aimed at residents of the Vallejo area. Are there any "mechanically interesting" things to do in Vallejo or its immediate environs? I'm well acquainted with San Francisco so don't need any help finding things to do there.

Well there is a Harbor Freight store there? :big:

There was a big naval shipyard there, Mare Island Naval Shipyard. They built nuke subs there, and the underwater footage for Sphere was filmed in a drydock there. Not sure what's left and open to the tourists, but you could check into that. Apparently the battleship Iowa will be housed there?

You're going to be so close to the Wine Country you might want to do an overnight in a bed and breakfast and rack up brownie points with SWMBO?

If you have time for a quick trip to Sacramento, they have one of the best train museums on the planet there: lots of old steam stuff.

Cheers,

BW

Marv,

I'll 2nd the trip to the CA State RR Museum - wonderful museum with a cool collection of steam toys :D Neat area of town - old Sacramento along the river.

And I'll third it. We toured it the last time we went to SF. My wife was ready to bodily drag me away until she discovered the dining car with exhibits of all the china used in the heyday of the big trains.

Hmmmm, I'll have to remember the "china" angle if I ever take a lady to an RR museum :D She can drool over place settings while I'll drool over steam toys :D
