That is one cute little machine!
For inspiration, the picture is a "mud digger" much like your crane, in full size. It’s not far from home and I'm seeing it this weekend. I visit this place very frequently, have admired it for hours. Have been dreaming of restoring it all the time. Could be a very good model project though. After all, having access to the real thing.
It has two cylinders. Double acting, slide valves.
