Hi

I have used the stainless steel 303 free cutting before with no problems. Is 304 a similar material??

Cheers

Rich

304 is a different beast, It's tough and stringy and needs sharp tools with a strong edge. Use lower cutting speeds
with enough feed to make a chip so the material doesn't work harden. Lots of oil helps too.

Good luck,
Mike

Which one is better for machining engine valves?

Drei

I use type 303 SS for all my valves. I only use type 304 if the part will need to be welded, I keep very little of 304 around. The difference between the two types is like night and day. Dave

Hi

Thanks Drei and Dave.

Nothing to do with model engineering this, I have to make 22 cabinet door handles for our bedroom furniture, each will have to be drilled and tapped twice so it looks like 303 would be better.

cheers

Rich

There's a professional machinist's saying regarding the machinability differences of 303 verses 304 stainless.

"303, She's for ME, 304, She's a ....... "

Hummmm, now what was that word? ;)
