Here a photo of my portable DRO 5"
I have upto 12" that can move to mills and lathes.
It keeps new since most I do not use DRO'S.
I use a ¼" aluminum rod with mag base on carriage. Nice for doing snap rings.

I use a digital vernier caliper on my lathe carriage, and it works really well.
Poor-man's DRO, but so inexpensive and easy.

.
What I did is over 20 years ago.

It looks simple and can be under $20.00 from HF. Even ones I for lathe are under $50.00. each. See photos.

If look at internet photos on left hand side you will see a small magnetic to carriage.
Using a standard DRO
Looks very simple.
