The point I was trying to make, that before WW2 you could not just buy a linear rail to build something like that.Before WW2 there lot of ATTACHMENTS for lathes .
In including indexing for gears making cutters
Thd lathes was over 16" swing..
Today it is just mill ATTACHMENT for upto 9" lathes.
The mill ATTACHMENT I purchased was under $65.00 it lot easier at cost .

But if my lathe is a collectable, (furniture like) show piece, I would go for a period correct restored or a reproduction.
If I just want to move the workpiece around to get some cutting done an uggly, but simple to make contraption would be easier. (that is more my style
I guess a linear rail based one I can make without a mill, just with a drill press and the lathe itself. (provided there is a face plate or 4-jaw chuck).
