Language is constantly changing. Attempts to standardize, or even legislate words usually doesn't work: French authorities tried to eradicate americanisms like "Le Hot Dog" and "Biftec." I never followed it up to see if it worked. Made-up languages to bring the world together (like Esperanto) did not succeed. For some reason a person in a court of law now "pleaded" rather than "plead" and "decimate" is now used for all destroyed rather than one-tenth destroyed. And if "mega-" is the multiplier term for million then how can I drive a "megacar?"
English vs. American just is, best to just get by.
