this is a video if a rivet setting machine that i just finished rebuilding at work.

the rivet has a 3/8" dia head, the shank is 3/16" dia and the shank is .200 long.
most of the machines i rebuild set a semi-tubular rivet like the kind used to rivet brake shoes on cars and trucks.
the metal backing plate that the shoes are riveted to have a hole which the rivet goes through and then is clinched to hold the brake lining.

this particular machine sets a self piercing rivet, there is no hole in the metal for the rivet to go through. the machine punches the rivet through the metal and creates its own hole.

the part i'm riveting in this video is 2 layers of .090" steel giving a total thickness of .180" for the rivet to pierce a hole through.
this particular rivet application is for a very large heating vent.
the machine is very fast (one second to set and reload the next rivet) and it has an automatic sorter to get the next rivet ready to set.
here is a pic of the sorter. it is the round drum with the yellow drive belt around it.

the video is kind of dark but that was the best i could do.

we have set semi tubular rivets from .040" dia x .060" long all the way up to 5/6" dia x 4" long. we also do solid rivets up 1 1/2" dia .

if anyone is interested in how the solid rivets are set i can get a video of that as well.

i have been doing this job for the last 14 years and it still amazes me how old the technology is and it still is used today without many changes over the years.

i hope you enjoyed this.

Chuck, I would like to see the video but it is not here to see...?

It would be good if you could find it for me (and others) to watch.
