A long time ago I bought 2 dies to build a knurler, due to lockdown for covid I found the time to build it.
I started with 3 pieces of C45 steel that I worked and grinded.

I do not recommend the push type, it stresses the spindle bearings too much, even on soft metals
 
You made a really nice looking functional tool. Years ago I bought one like this from LatherMaster in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I copied the design thus giving me two knurlers, one for straight knurls and one for cross hatched knurls. Knurling really dresses up an item.
 
Yes. The lid is in two parts because of the very deep recess. Doing it in one piece would use too much support material.
 
I only have a small Chinese mini-lathe so when I made my knurling tool, it was constructed on a dedicated tool post. Just swop the tool post and I'm ready to go.
