I am building a 1 1/2 inch scale Minnie Traction Engine. My question is, what would be the best materials to use for the cylinder liner and piston? My thoughts were cold-rolled steel for the liner and aluminum for the piston. I could use 660 bronze and stainless for the piston. What are your thoughts on this? Alan.

Thanks for the imfo . I am trying to track down some mehanite or decent cast iron . not so easy to get a short end.

My supplier in Barrie Ontario stocks grey cast iron in 2" and 2 1/2" diameters, and sells it by the linear foot. I don't know where you are, so it is difficult to advise you.

Gun metal or brass is quite satisfactory for both the cylinder and the piston , steel is not recommended ...........it will rust when the engine is not in use .
