Hi Guys,

I hope that this is the right place to post my "Micrometer Holder" thread and pictures.

This picture is of the three parts cut so far. This also shows how the wings will be mounted. They were cut from a 95 mm diameter by 10 mm thick steel disc, retrieved from the scrap bin. I used the M6 threaded hole in the middle to mount the disc on a mandrel, in order to face it and remove the flame cut edge.

The two 20 mm wide wings were cut using a bandsaw from the disc. I also cut the top flat edge off to remove the laser start hole. All the other holes and groove were already in the piece when I got it.

When the other edge is removed the base will be 75 mm in length.

Each wing is 20 mm wide. These will be trimmed lengthwise to match the base.

I will be doing a drawing at a later date when I have figured out some sizes.

A couple of drawings !

The base drawing blue dots are 4 mm diameter pilot holes used to mark the hole positions in the wings. They will later be opened out to M5 clearance. Material thickness is 12 mm.

The blue holes are drilled 4 mm to a maximum depth of 15 mm then threaded M5 . The wings are the off cuts from the base disk. Nominally 75 mm long and 20 mm high.

John looking good, brilliant to build it up. My head was stuck on cast it or hog it out of a solid lump!

Hi Bob,,

Thank you for your reply !

I'm quite lucky, to have a firm close by that does laser cutting and lets me help myself to their scrap bin. Sometimes if I'm lucky and get there before they empty it, there are often some nice pieces in there. That is where the piece of round originally came from.

I've yet to finish the wings ready for drilling and mounting. I propose to put a short length of 12 mm rod across the wings in order to make a hinge. I've started a drawing of the rest of the drilling of the wings.

I will publish that later. If you want DFX's let me know. Might be tomorrow now, hospital appointments and all that.

Hi Guys,

I've done the drawing for the rest of the details for the wings.

I've drilled and reamed a 1/2" hole 11 mm from the base. I have also discovered that I do not have enough material to drill the top for a thumbscrew. So whilst its too late to change mine, a 10 mm hole would be better ! I will change the drawing to show this.

Hi Guys,

I've done a modified drawing with a 10 mm hole in the wings and a hole for a thumbscrew at an angle that gives me more meat to drill and thread.

The new thumbscrew hole drilling is set at an angle of 45 degrees. The old 12 mm hole is shown by the faint blue ring.

In the case of mine I've just drilled a hole at an angle. This will give me about 7 mm of material for the thumbscrew thread.

Some more pictures to follow.

This is how it looks at the moment. Wings fitted, thumbscrews fitted, the base cleaned up.

This is how I set it up in the mill vice to drill and thread the holes for the thumbscrews. I used a piece of wood to support the base at an angle of 45 degrees.
