I am building a 5" G Simplex Loco designed by Martin Evans and am puzzled how to machine the outer steam dome.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Regards

John

Hello John,
Welcome to the collective.
Unfortunately I'm not able to answer your question ! Simply because I haven't a clue what loco you are talking about and I've no Idea who Martin Evans is.

Some information about the loco and the part in particular would help. A picture or sketch, what material, how big. Any information that would help us to help you.

Assuming it's a cover rather than the pressure vessel itself, I'll recap what I did on mine:

1) Turn the outer profile normally. If the top is rounded you may need a ball turner or else cut in steps and file smooth. Same for the flared bottom profile.

2) The underside is a cylindrical cut to match the radius of the boiler. This can be milled with a fly cutter or by use of a rotary table.

Does this make sense to you?

You could ask the question on a forum dedicated to building model railway engines http://modeleng.proboards.com/ would be a good place to start , the simplex has been built by hundreds if not thousands so you should get lots of feedback from experienced builders.

Thanks for the responses. Sorry I did not know about the dedicated Simplex page. I will use it in future.

It is the outer dome and my problem is how to mount the the dome on the lathe for machining.
