Howdy from Auburn California

Just found this great forum My name is Jim Ryan and I am 79 yrs young and still going strong. This old moss back is happy to be here. I have had many hobbies over the years, gold mining, wood working, machining, farming and my latest metal casting. I am a retired electronic tech. worked on most of the Air force war birds including the wart-hog. retired at the young age of 54 and have loved every second of it. I have a well equipped mach. shop,couple of mills s/b tool room lathe mig and stick welders all kinds of saws metal and wood (some one retired for 25 years needs a lot of toys). Most of the stuff I make is for the shop but model engines is a very interesting subject. I have been a member for only a couple of hours so I have very much reading to do thanks for having me. Nice area around Auburn. I spent a couple of summers just south of you, just outside of Pollock Pines on Hwy. 50. I was working for the US Forest Service at the time as a wildland firefighter (Eldorado Hotshot Crew). On my days off I would ramble around the area on my motorcycle.

Hello Mark thanks for the warm welcome, yes the A10 is a great bird I worked on it for 10 years as an electronic tech. on the flight line at a depot level base in California. It was a great plane to work on and always kept up to date in its electronic systems. Jim

Your post about a lot of jims really made me laugh. at one time I worked in a back shop repairing electronic equipment for the f 111's and nearly everyone in that shop was named jim, it really got complicated, (hey Jim just did not work too well) Regards JPR

Just saw some Videos from YOUTUBE. The A10 was a fantastic tank killer and great ground supporter. Same practically wiped off all of Saddam Hussein's tanks and aircrafts on the ground. The modernised Gatling gun was equally fantastic.Does it ever jammed while firing so many rounds per sec???

A10 looks like an ugly duckling and yet performed like a Swan.
Did Russian caught up with their own A-10??

I was not going to say this but the way the thread is going se la vi.
I work not far from Auburn New Jersey. go past Auburn road every day the next door neighbors growing up were named Ryan and my normal first name nickname is ..............Jim. Small world ? coincidence? overused common names ????

Gus: yes the A-10 is impressive. I have had the opportunity to be in the tower of the local air gunnery range during live fire exercises. distinctive sound and not what one would imagine.

Hi Gus I have never heard of the gun jamming but then everything mal functions eventually. the drum was huge took up a large portion of the main frame. The aircraft was so silent that on a high speed run you would not hear it untill it was on you, this was demonstrated to me on my test pilots last flight before being re-assigned. Funny thing the AF was thinking of de-activating the hog before the Desert wars. Most pilots wanted to fly the high speed jets. Dont know if the Russians have a copy but they are missing a bet if they dont.
