I am looking through one of the old model engineering books available on Archive .org
Model Engine Making J Pollock
http://archive.org/details/modelenginemakin00pocorich
I love the opening of this book.
It illustrates the value of this fine hobby.
also some of the things we take for granted like a surface plate were very expensive in 1888 somthing in the neighborhood of 2 days wages for a skilled engineer or 4 days wage for an average worker. 15 s
these old books have great wisdom but in some ways things have changed a lot we are probably blessed in more ways than we realize. As expensive as things seem import tools are not expensive.
Also standard screw threads were just being established.at this time in history.
