Well half of it so far, the rest is still in the mail and will hopefully arrive tomorrow.

Postage was expensive and there is still another box coming.

I've wanted a Sherline lathe for a while to sit in between my watch makers lathe and my big(ish) Chinese lathe.
A 4410 lathe with no tooling and just a face plate now costs $1895.50 in Australia new and there is no way I'm paying that much for one.

I knew someone that was selling his in the US for $150 US so I snapped it up. Cost me more than that to get it sent to me, but is still a good deal.
It will need a new tailstock but that's something I can get for it later.

I'm just hoping the bed arrives tomorrow so I can have a new toy to play with on the weekend

Tmuir,
I'd say you did very well even including the postage. Also impressed that it took only seven days to get from US to Western AU. Let us know how it works.

Arv,

Both those are good prices. I see the first one includes tooling and the support column to turn it into a mill. I have the long bad version of that Sherline with the milling attachment. I got it at an auction several years ago and paid just about as much for it. So I'd say anybody wanting that first one get on the line and get it.

Yes the postage was very quick.
I wasn't expectng it until the end of next week.
This is the second large package I've had sent from the US and the first one also took under a week too, whilst smaller ones seems to take 2 weeks.

It wil need a new tailstock and maybe a couple of other minor parts but I am very happy with the price, especially that it came with a selection of collets and although I haven't checked yet it looks like it may also take the collets from my BTM watch makers lathe.

Nice find. Good luck with your new toy! ;D

Dam, I just got home from work and the rest of the lathe hasn't arrived, looks like I won't have my new toy to play with this weekend after all. :'(

There is a used Sherline mill and lathe on Craigslist if anyone would be interested. I have no idea if it is a good deal or not.

1st one is a good deal, it's an older unit, iincluding the milling column and a bunch of accessories.

The 2nd one is just the short bed lathe with the smaller 3-jaw chuck and a drill chuck, no tool post or anything else. A person would probably spend another $200+ tooling up.

A new short-bed lathe is $575

or various packages here.

Yeh!!!

My wife just rang me up and told me there is a parcel for me to collect after 4pm today at the post office.
This can only be the rest of the lathe.
There are many valid reasons why this box took an extra 7 days to get to me than the other one and I knew that, but I was beginning to get worried that it had been lost in the post.

Tonight I will spend a bit of time checing it all over and making myself a list of what I need to buy to get it all going. I know it needs a new tailstock and I think there is going to be some slop in the topslide so it may need new gibs too.

One of the first things I will be building for this lathe is a Jacots attachment for polishing clock pivots which means I will be using it unpowered as a turns. :big:

Got the lathe assembled tonight.
Just needed to clean and oil the leadscrews and ways and adjust the handles to get rid of someof the backlash.
Will order a new tailstock soon and may get a replacement topslide as the toolpost has been over tightened in the past and damaged it in places.

Thought I would give you a couple of photos of all my lathes.

First my 'big' Chinese lathe.

Now my other 3.
My Chinese wood turning lathe in the back
Followed by my 'new' Sherline.
And in the front left my British made BTM watch makers lathe.

You should be set for any turning operation that you come across now! Thm:

Thats the plan.
I wonder how long before I will want to replace my 'big' lathe with a bigger one? :big:
