I put a gate in a fence at a shop down the street and she paid me partly in trade for this little thing. It like a little desk thing. I'm going to put a bottom on it and a flange so I can mount it to a pipe and mount it to my lathe for a tool tray. The red part is felt I put on and it's wide enough to hold my caliper and other tools. I'm going to attach a rack on the sides for drill chucks and such. I've seen something like it online. and I wanted one, now I have one. I'm going to strip the paint and refinish it. It's hardwood, no plywood.

Look ancient! A coat of paint and it will be as good as new.

By the way you might want to consider elbows and a short nipple to allow pivoting the unit back and forth. The idea of course is to allow you to move it out of the way as needed.

Sounds like a plan . I too dislike it when people coat nice wood or metal with paint.

I have nothing against paint but sometimes you find a real gem under the paint. Back during my youth, I couldn't have been 13, maybe younger one of the neighbors gave me an old desk. The desk honestly looked like hell with many coats of paint on it. So I took what I could apart and proceeded to strip the paint. Back then a kid using dangerous chemicals was not considered a problem.

In any event I hit solid oak, the legs, the desktop, the drawer front, everything really was solid oak. A clear poly finish was applied and the desk ended up looking fantastic. That desk is still with me, mind you that was 40 some odd years ago.

This has sorta pulled the thread off track, but sometimes the wood does deserve to be visible. Even so sometimes I go the opposite way and paint. It just depends on many factors including where and how something will be used. For this piece I wonder about easy of cleaning.

I have nothing against paint either. it is a decorative protective coating. It adds color to our life and environment. I would not want a rusty car or machine.

I have finished pine with stain and clear poly and i have painted some.
but I love the look and richness of oak cherry brass and bronze.
Like you siad why paint over a jewel.

IIRC many of the strippers now are orange oil based and much less caustic.

Paint is coming off. Its going to get a treatment of Ultra Ever Dry. It's a hydrophobic two part system that will repel water, mud, oil. It truly is amazing. Not your father's 3M crap.
And being able to pivot it out of the way is a must.
One other thing I want to add to it is a metal surface probably a length of channel to the back so I'll have a place to mount magnetic things.

I got it mounted today. I made a base for it and used 1/2" pipe for the post. The left side holds my drill chucks and live center and Chuck keys and on the right side I attached a strip of sheet metal for my magnetic bases.
