Hi all!
I'm very new here and a very green machinist.
I was looking for gear suppliers that are suitable for some of the engine plans here and cannot find a thing...HELP
Thanks for your patience
Tim

Thank you for the info, been to both but cannot find what I need... not even close:mad:
I am going to attempt to build a Tiny Inline Four and the gears called out on the prints are impossible to find.
Guess I will have to try to make them:eek:

Cutting your own gears is not difficult. However the following would be helpful.
1. Get a Master Gear Catalogue for data reference.
2. Buy or DIY Dividing Head with Index Plate.
3. Buy a complete set of gear cutters. They come in set of 8 to cut a range of
gear tooth count. For Webster Engine ,I use Metric Module 0.8. Gear cutters
came from CTC.com and not expensive. I also have Module 1.0 which I
used to cut Mitre Gears which is another ball game. Made my own Dividing Head with direct index. Idea came from Harold Hall's ''Milling.A Complete Course''.Another great reference book.
4. ''Gears and Gear Cutting'' by Ivan Law will be very useful.

There are more than 6 HMEM Forum Members experienced in gear cutting to help. After at least 1/2 dozen bad gears, you will cut good gears. ''Standard off the Shelf'' sometimes come with unsuitable hub.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and adding your suggestions
I have been doing some research and looking into your suggestions.
Guess there is nothing wrong with building a big scrap bin while learning:)

It's possible that the gears specified on the drawing could be substituted for another pitch but have the same pitch diameter. Most of the fellows that make up drawings use a standard pitch, 32, 48 etc. for their gears so usually the pitch diameters will be available in both.

Likewise, I have to cut Module 8 timing gears in place of the Module 48 Pitch for the Howell V-2. In between gear centre distance change required. All in 12 DIY gears required. CTC does not stock Imperial Module Gear Cutters.
Imperial Gear Cutters from UK and US will cost Gus ---------''arm and leg'' landed in Singapore.

Gear cutter selection to suit gear tooth count is on page 65 Ivan Law's Gear and Gear Cutting book. For a given Module ,tooth profile varies in order to mesh . There are 8 cutters per module.
