In the way of things, when I was rearranging some stuff I came across four of these. They have failed my "20 year test". I hate to toss them out. Free, except for $16.10 shipping (that's a medium flat rate box).

DC servo motor with an encoder, for those that don't know... You must have been wanting to do a CNC conversion on a small machine at some point in your life! Well, 20 years ago, at least! LOL

a lot of thsose motors were used in printers, quadrature optical encoder and a DC motor - you could use them for a 3-D printer, for example, or for a CNC router using a dremel tool - if they are more powerful, you might be able to automate a small mill or lathe - the controllers are not expensive, it's writing all the software.... but you can buy several varieties of three axis control software too.

There was a gent named Art Eckstein who did a nice DRO design using the encoders from these way back when a DRO was just a dream for most hobby folks. It used drafting board cable (still have that spool too) and some preprocessing to display on a PC. Input was via the parallel port I think. Fortunately our club is having a fall picnic and sale so I'll probably take my four along and give them to anyone who can use them. They were on the surplus market back in the late '90s for around $5 if memory isn't utterly shot.

I think these have 3600 or 4000 counts per turn using quadrature.

The motor is about 1 1/4 in diameter and 2 3/4 in. long.
