Back plate

Hi all ,having a real hard job over here in the uk to find a chuck backplate with 2 1/4" x 6tpi thread for my old southbend,would be more than happy with a used one but no luck as yet,want to fit a smaller 4 jaw chuck on the lathe,maybe l will have to make one at this rate grrrrrr

eadsy to make one so make 2. Make one with spigot and drillings to suit
cheap chinese chucks etc

I had a backplate for my Boxford which someone had cut on the lathe - it was very tight on the spindle. So as not to mess it up, I waited until a cheap (well, comparatively cheap) tap came up on ebay. 2 1/4 x 6 is BSF, if the thread form is right. There are taps on ebay, but they're not cheap! Maybe you could sell it afterwards...

I went the cheap way,bought a hex fullnut,welded it to a plate and
machine up as required

That sounds very strange to me , what size Southbend do you have ? I have only come across 1 1/2" x 8 tpi spindle , same with Boxford , no surprise as it is a Southbend copy .
The Boxford 4.5 " precision lathe has a 2" x 7 tpi spindle.

hi abby it a 14 1/2 x 16 southbend made in 1942 and the spindle is indeed 2 1/4" x 6tpi and also has a funny size spindle taper so l tend to use a small 3 jaw chuck with a centre in it to turn between centres ,think l will end up buying a cast blank an have ago at making my own back plate.
