Finger Engine - my first build

Looking good! Did you follow one of the plans out there (which one?) or is it your own design? Craig

Rotary motion to reversible linear motion

I watched the series on the friction drive drill press and I kept wondering just how much power can be transferred through a small contact patch between the friction wheel and the disk. Plus, I think that if the disk got dusty or dirty, the power transfer would get worse and worse. Slippage...

    QC Tool Storage

Great balls of tool holders!! I count 35 (thirty-five!) on the wall. I'd ask the same question I did of Ken...but I'm not sure I want to read a post that long! ;) But, what are the two on the extreme right, rows 2 and 3? And what is the lever-handled device (extreme left, row 1)? Any...

    QC Tool Storage

Nice and simple--I like it! I see about 14 tool holders in the RH picture. Appears all of them are HSS? (Although the leftmost appears to be a knurling tool.) What all have you got? Craig

    Hearing Aids

The hearing aid feature was just approved for Canada and I'm quite interested in it. Between the AirPods Pro 2 and your iPhone, it performs a hearing test and produces an audiograph. The Hearing Aid mode in AirPods then applies equalization to compensate. The sound pickups in the AirPods...

My Take on a Tangential Tool Holder

Beautiful! To get an idea of scale, what size of tool bit is it designed for? Craig (PS Great photography. Are you using a light box?)

    Question re: Atlas metal lathe

This is a drawing I got from another site. Craig

    Question re: Atlas metal lathe

Atlas made lathes from 6 inch to 12 inch swings and only a few parts were interchangeable between sizes. What model does your friend have? I know for the 6 inch, the motor pulley was available with either a 1/2 or 5/8 inch bore. I believe all 1/2 HP motors in the last 50(?) years have a 5/8"...

    P.M. Research #5 Steam Engine

Yikes, spinal surgery! I hope everything went as well as it could and that you're up and around as soon as possible. Listen to your Physical Terrorist (did I get the spelling right?) but don't overdo things. Your model will wait. Those of us that have been following along will just have to...

    Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition 2024

Go out to a competition of high school robotics clubs and I think you'll see plenty of kids that are passionate about designing, creating and operating mechanical stuff. They may not be making scale models of long-obsolete things from the past but they are developing skills that let them build...

    Powder painting a flywheel

For powder coating supplies, did you contact: https://emeraldcoatings.com I have no personal experience with Emerald. (I think I got the link from a posting here??) Re getting US products in Canada, you can sometimes save a lot by using a cross-border service. My wife and I use Shippsy...

    P.M. Research #5 Steam Engine

What are you using to drive your small taps? Joe Pie has several videos where he uses a tiny, shop-made driver--it is just a knurled disk of aluminum about 1 inch in diameter. There is just a set screw to retain the tap. He has different different drivers for different size taps. They are...

    DIVIDING PLATE ..DIY ..Help...!!

Stepping back a little, this is for a gear hobber, right? The 39 tooth plate will create a 39 tooth gear? So any angular deviation in the plate will be faithfully transferred to the gear? (As compared to a dividing head with a 40:1 worm gear. There, only 1/40th of any deviation in the plate...

    P.M. Research #5 Steam Engine

Any consternation when you first spun up the lathe? ;) It actually looks like it would be reasonably well balanced. Did the lathe want to hop around much? Craig

My version of a Die Filer From Bar Stock

By chance, I noticed recently that Martin Models appears to sell files designed for use in a die filer: https://www.martinmodel.com/collections/die-filer-casting-set/products/die-filer-casting-page-parallel-machine-files?variant=41195838144595 In case it helps anyone. Craig

    P.M. Research #5 Steam Engine

The reference I use says a 1.75mm drill gives 74% thread penetration. A #50 drill (0.070 inches or 1.778mm) gives 69% thread penetration. Using a 1.85mm would give a very low penetration IMHO. Craig (From "Handyman in Your Pocket" by Young & Glover, 2008.)

That looks really good. Thanks for the lead!! Craig

    Fastener cross reference

Also, I was aware of Godshalls. I had squirrelled away a link to another supplier that seems to have a good selection of (mostly) UNC: http://www.microfasteners.com/home.php?cat=574 Craig

    Fastener cross reference

Thank you, that is pretty much what I was thinking of. I take it that the colour coding is to show typical substitutions? Craig
