    PDF's L-cheapo ignition

Spanners seem to be grab a few and try to me. I do try to avoid the universal spanner, AKA shifting wrench or crescent wrench is it over there?? Whatever you like to call it they are definitely a last resort unless you want rounded nuts or bolt heads.

    PDF's L-cheapo ignition

Not to worry awake, I'm on my 79th orbit of the sun so grew up with imperial. Still look at 100mm, 150mm, 75mm and think 4", 6", and 3" respectively so I can get a rough mental image. Really, as far as I am concerned we are aiming for a model (Hopefully one that works) and how we get there is...

    PDF's L-cheapo ignition

This recent discussion is interesting even if a side track off the original topic. I get frustrated with some drawings / plans where you have to calculate from the given dimensions just what the missing dimension might be. I have very limited experience messing with metal. A textile dyer most...

Threading a long rod and keeping it straight.

Thanks Terryd, Now my head is sorted. I could probably do similar if only I can remember down the years.

Threading a long rod and keeping it straight.

Hi, The bit about the 8mm hole through to the headstock had me scratching my head a bit. Did you mean through to the tailstock end which would work if your tailstock was continuous bore I guess. My little 7x12 Seig clone has a blind outer end where the screw handle attaches to the tailstock...

Threading a long rod and keeping it straight.

All the above reminded me of this item for turning slender rod and perhaps if you had a few to do it might be possible to adapt the idea to support the threaded diameter behind the die??? John B

    Werowance attempts Upshur Vertical Single

Them there Shop Elves and in my case Gremlins got a whole lot to answer for if ever somebody catches em. 👿 👺 👹 💩 Not sure which one most resembles the little monster that seems to inhabit my playpen.

    Sun-Planet Engine - Finished

May not be the camera so much as the light source, that can play havoc with colour. I retired 20 years ago after a working life of messing with colour (Textile Dyer) and love being retired messing about in my playpen trying to make model engines rather than a pile of swarf.

    Sun-Planet Engine - Finished

Very interesting engine, Thanks for sharing it with us. My screen also has the colour coming up orange and still looks good anyway, I could adjust screen to get a red but too lazy I guess???

    Odds and Ends Engine Runs

Marcmeng59, Another option is to set up an account in a video sharing site. I use Vimeo free and you can share the links. Here hopefully is a link to one of mine. At least it gives you one option. There are other Video sharing sights I guess. John B <iframe...

    Werowance attempts Upshur Vertical Single

I do recall seeing the test piece photo thanks. Loctite does seem to be the model machinist's magic glue and as has been said it certainly avoids distortion and stresses from heating required for hard solder. Seems there are many forms of Loctite and I have a loctite PDF of some 48...

    Werowance attempts Upshur Vertical Single

Hi Werowance, You said "the reamed holes are very nice and tight. was difficult to get them pushed through by hand, i hope that keeps things straight when brazing." My thought was if that is true where is the solder going to go? My understanding is that it needs a few thou clearance. I...

    Werowance builds a webster

Hi Werowance, Just a thought on the chip and filament spool. Is it possible to wind third party filament on to an empty spool? Or have they set it up somehow to recognise the amount used???? Winding filament would be a bit of fluffing about tho. I detest printers of any variety that...

    Werowance builds a webster

Great build thread. Plus, you got your priorities correct in playing with the Grandchild as they tend to grow up and your engine build will still be waiting for your attention tomorrow. Or the day after? ;) All the best, John B

    Camping steam engine

Thanks Cogsy, It does seem a rather large boiler but I guess you would need a decent fire underneath to generate the steam required by the engine. I know at the local show it was run from the main boiler in the vintage machinery shed at 25psi.

    Camping steam engine

The last photos are of a Sirius engine (As I know it anyway). They are fascinating to watch in action as I did at a local Agricultural Show in VIC Australia. I believe that Stuart models have castings etc. It may be of interest to see one in action in this vid. About half way through there is...

    Verical hit and miss engine

Hooray! Another great write-up and video of the end result. As usual well worth the reading time over the build. Thank you Brian for your efforts in building and posting progress or lack thereof as sometimes happens. The few things I make never get a write-up as I get too...

    Verical hit and miss engine

Glad it all went well for you Brian, trouble now is that you will see some of the teensy, tiny faults you missed before getting your eyes fixed. ha ha. As a surgeon (who was about to sew several tendons back in position for me after a tumble that tore em.) Cataract and joint replacement are...

    Verical hit and miss engine

For what it's worth Brian, when I had my cataracts done Dr said to just get some Dollar shop reader glasses to help until I could get new prescription specs. I did as suggested and found it useful as a cheap interim measure. John B
