    My first shot at scraping

I am anxious to try that canode stuff... if nothing else the water clean up will be nice. (Not to mention being less likely to cause my wife to kill me if I get it on my clothes....) I too noticed it seemed like the width of the cut was narrower than expected. The radius is pretty big, but...

    My first shot at scraping

I have some scratches still left from over-exuberent use of technique 1) but it's actually pretty darn close. That last pic was several rounds ago but it's the last one where the camera picked up the ink at all. I do think I want a few more passes at it. I switched up from my big scraper to one...

    My first shot at scraping

I started with nothing but the very best of raw materials. ::) It's about the ugliest hunk of old window weight cast iron ever... LOL. But, it was of a decent size for what I wanted and it was exactly the right price. (Free) ;-) So, I did my best at milling a hunk of something usable from it...

    "New"? site from Amazon.. www.amazonsupply.com

It being Amazon I would think as they spin up to full speed it will get better.... especially if they leverage their shipping abilities. It could be interesting. Free 2 day Amazon Prime shipping on that 15 Lb cast iron bar? Schawing! One of my big pet peeves is when you buy something and they...

    "New"? site from Amazon.. www.amazonsupply.com

At least, I hadn't seen it before and it says beta..... http://www.amazonsupply.com/ It seems to be similar-ish to McMaster or Grainger. Worth a look. I posted here as it's commercial even though I'm not selling anything.

How to Scrape in Home Shop Machinist

Another interesting read.... lots of scraping projects here: http://www.benchtest.com/index-w.html I've just skimmed so far but it came up as part of an unrelated search and I was like "I recognize that pattern! Those were hand scraped!" Just figured I'd post it here for those interested.

Why does saliva produce a better looking finish than oil when machining steel?

LOL... saliva, blood.... everything I make seems to get one or the other (Or both) on it.... LOL. If it makes you feel better I usually scrub stuff off with dish soap and water before assembly. :)

    Overhaul of a 9" SB model "A"

LOL, it looks like it's on a spring or something.... that is just amazing! Thanks again for the information and inspiration with this thread. It's both taught me a lot and removed some of the intimidation of the "Dark art" of scraping. I've got some projects coming up where I will post my...

    Overhaul of a 9" SB model "A"

Steamer makes a point about surface plates being cheap.... at the moment, Enco is having a nice sale on several. Example: Sale price on a 12x18 surface plate is $45.95 http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PARTPG=INLMKD&PMPXNO=949402&PMAKA=640-0120 BUT WAIT there's more.... LOL, you can also use...

    Inexpensive Touchless Tach

No worries... I'm sure he took the one out of the carbon monoxide detector to replace the one in the smoke detector.... ;-P (Well, I would have... ;)

How to Scrape in Home Shop Machinist

Thanks for the reminder! I ordered the most recent two issues a couple of weeks ago but wanted to wait to subscribe until I would get the next issue in line instead of a dupe of what I already have. The timing is about right now. I'm still missing #6 in the series (On it's way), but have 1-5...

    4x6 Metal Bandsaw Mods

Nice vid! It just so hapens I picked one of these up a month or so ago. I haven't used the table yet, but I have the same concerns about it's stiffness and will probably do an AL one just like yours for it. Well done on the narration too... sounds very professional.

Graver Making & Hand Turning DVD by Bill Smith

I rent often from SmartFlix. I'm usually after the information and learning from the vids rather than owning a set of something else to get dusty on the shelf so it makes sense to me. I am just about certain that you aren't allowed to copy them, though. (Well... maybe if the copyright has...

    Felt?

I just got some recently from http://www.bluechipmachineshop.com along with some way oil. It arrived very quickly (I think I ordered on Friday Eve and it showed up on Tue.. 4 days & that was over a weekend.) and they actually doubled the way oil portion of the order. Not sure if that was...

    Learning how to scrape :D

So far, there has been a fair amount of information... and some portion of it is actually about scraping but quite a bit centers on making the scrapers. (And on making the tools to make the scrapers.) I wish (And maybe the 6th and later articles will get there) that more of it was about things...

If your budget was $1000 bucks and you wanted to build small engines.....

I had assumed he was looking just at the lathe part of the equasion at the moment... I would indeed go a different route than I listed if it was more of an overall tooling including the mill setup. i have always been intrigued by the 3 in 1 machines myself. It does seem to have quite a few...

If your budget was $1000 bucks and you wanted to build small engines.....

Heh, shopping with someone else's money.. whooohooo! ;-) Hmm, lathe only? I would probably go for this machine: http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-x-12-inch-precision-benchtop-lathe-44859.html If you can get it on sale and use a %20 coupon you could probably get it for $640 but just in case...

    Listen To The Machine!

Heh, the problem with "Listening to the machine" is you need a point of reference, which means you have to have done it right at least once to have heard it! ;-) Seriously, for a "Newb" you don't know what "right" sounds like until you have some time on the machine. I find myself constantly...

    Quick Change Tool Post Wrench.

Yep, that'll do it! Looks great, and thanks for the detailed walkthrough. I've thought about making something similar but the lazy me keeps getting by with the wrench, LOL.

    Bought me a Monster!!!

LOL, considering Tubal Cain is a character from the Hebrew bible and was a close descendant of Cain from Genisis... "The real" Tubal Cain died a lot earlier than that. He is kind of the inventer and master of metalworking. I wasn't in the hobby when the other TubalCain was around, but I...
