    Better Insight into Cam Timing

The amount (degrees) it changes depends on your flank radius. If your lift begins at 10 BTDC but it takes another 20 crankshaft degrees before the lobe moves to make up for the lash your opening is now at 10 ATDC. Now if you undercut your base circle by the amount of lash everything goes back...

    Minimizing heat build-up when milling?

As Tin mentioned you want to take a bigger cut, right up to the limits of the tool and the mill's rigidity. Insufficient chip loading will actually dull the cutter.

Electrolysis Rust Removal... A vice this time!

Good job, just made me jealous. :)

    Flathead V-8 engine

Another work of art cometh from George! Yippee! How do the lash adjusters/cam followers/tappets work with that layout?

    Better Insight into Cam Timing

You cant have too many books. The fun thing about technical reading is it brings to mind more questions to be solved by more books! :D

    Complex casting

Thanks for the update, and watch out for those zinc fumes. Water heater anodes would probably be cheaper, boats = $$$.

    Better Insight into Cam Timing

Such a book would be very helpful, but I fear it does not exist. At least, not one that specifically targeted. What will exist, are various SAE papers on the subject, but not easy to find unless you have access to library that has them. There have been a lot of recent papers regarding variable...

How do you cut small threads?

When the cutting forces are greater then the stiffness of the part, a die is not cheating. :) Single point threading is a useful skill and a point of pride for many, but when it comes down to making the part you need correctly, the proper solution is set up a screw machine to make it, and to my...

    Shrinkage holes

It looks like there was a bit of loose sand at the gate that got washed into the mould. Its hard to pack the sand well when your gate takes an immediate 90 bend and starts feeding the part. I like to cut a little splash area into the cope so the metal overflows into the mould cavity, pouring...

Spits and sputter but no substained run

Congrats, and thanks for closing the loop on the whole story. I get a kick out of guys working on electric cars that consider 300v as really high voltage, they have nothing on ignition systems. :) Ignition HV, as you learned, is an entirely different ballpark. Boots are a requirement at our...

    Machining a crankshaft

On my particular lathe, the chuck needs to be removed to fit the 3MT center in the spindle. Kind of typical for import lathes. Regular faceplates can sometimes have holes for dog "tails", or at least holes to install a bolt to drive any type of dog you have.

    Machining a crankshaft

Here is a pic of a crankshaft, the offset holes are held between two dead centers and the dog drives off a bolt where the chuck usually attaches.

    Reversing drum label

If you have a good picture of what it looks like, you can draw it and make a photoresist copy. I am sure some of our radio restorer friends know the process. Quite a lot like making a circuit board. AB8XE

    V12 Build

Road trip! Probably more like snowmobile trip, with the exception of today through Friday. :( I would love to see George's workshop even though every thing he makes leaves me feeling quite inadequate.

    Help!!! 4cyl Main block Journals

If the girdle is that much softer then the block, your best bet is to scrap the girdle, as its probably not the right material for the job anyway. "Soft" aluminum has a poor record of longevity for engine parts, scrapping even more work. :( If you dont have a lathe to do a proper "line bore"...

    Gear cutter help

If you already have a 16t and 30 tooth meshing, its going to get worse with the proper 15t, which will be smaller. Was the center distance calculated for the smaller pair?

Need help identyfying a turbine and a casting kit

I think I recognize that casting. There was a homebrew turbine movement about 15-17 years ago, they started with a stainless sheet turbine and wooden compressor wheel, then sold kits of the various upgraded designs. For some reason that casting sticks in my memory of their last version, before...

    Tool grinding persective

Indeed. There are a lot of different variables that go into each "home shop" as well as the projects we each take on. For us still working stiffs, time is the biggest obstacle. It is, afterall, a hobby, and work, family, household chores, etc. have to come first. I went to an auto mechanic...
