    Trying out metric

I have always wondered at U.S. tv shows like CSI and Bones which routinely quote metric units for distance and weight. I thought they were just trying to be "scientific". Ian.

    Universal motors...

By the look of your diagram, none of them are important for the running of the motor. They are all only noise suppression caps to try and cover some of the natural arcing at the commutator. I can't try to guess at the correct values, but I am sure the motor would run without them if neccessary...

    digital thermometer for amateur HT

Well done, I hadn't thought of the protective sleeve idea, but I guess it may be how the very high temperature probes are made anyway. Ian.

    digital thermometer for amateur HT

I would be very surprised if the supplied probes are capable of surviving 1300 degrees. That figure is just the maximum value that the meter can indicate, think full-scale on an analog meter. Ian.

    Oscillating I.C. Engine

....disappear into the mess under the lathe or where ever those little parts go when they escape. Brian, have no fear, we may not be talking but by golly we are watching. Ian.

    Photo Resizing

Under My Account/Control Panel/Edit Options/Thread Display Options there is a field for image display size. Mine is set to default which the accompanying note says will allow the forum to resize images for display. Works fine for me including the ones mentioned on Brian's thread. However I agree...

I finally got my balls back!!!

Al has a valid point there. The default position for this type of governor is "full throttle" with the engine stopped. As the engine speeds up, the governor starts to close the throttle and, if the stars align correctly, will catch the rising engine speed with a suitable rate of closing throttle...

Nemett Lynx 15 cc 4 Stroke I/C Petrol Engine

Congratulations, Gus. A great looking engine. Ian.

    A new engine for fall---

Call it a design feature, Brian. Maybe it needs different cooling nearer the head? Ian.

    Water Cooled Webster

Hi Bob, As Brian said, don't for one minute think that you are "talking to yourself". That applies to all the other regular posters/builders here too. So many of the rest of us read everything that you all post and generally just look on in awe thinking, jeez I wish I could do that. You are...

    Swifty's build of Nemett Lynx

Thanks, Paul, That seems to be the only one in the whole south-east according to their web site. Ian.

    Swifty's build of Nemett Lynx

Hi Paul, care to name your supplier? I will be following along with interest. Ian.

How do you heat your shop ?

No one from Oz seems to want to comment about this, so here goes. For probably 95% of us there is fully automatic solar heating:rolleyes:. When I came home this afternoon, on a pleasant 32C day, it was 45C in the shed. I bet our friends in Adelaide can top that by a great deal! Ian.

    Thank you Canadians!!

Now the fourth day over 40c in Melbourne. My wife says I should get aircon in the shed! I think she really means 'get out of my way in the house'. Ian.

    Thank you Canadians!!

Back in about 1905, my grandfather went to Canada somewhere near Banff from Scotland. After less than a year he went back to Scotland because it was too cold in Canada!!! Then he came to Oz where, as others say above, we are looking at 40c and higher even as far south as Melbourne. Ian.

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Hi Grigg, Thanks for your interest, at this time nothing much has happened. The crank will have to be sent to Singapore for machining as no-one in Oz has the capability any more! This will conservatively cost us $25k and probably more, so approaches are being made to various companies etc for...

    Homebuilt Panbrake

Looks like a good solid version. Can't wait to see the real thing. As they say in the cooking shows, here is one I prepared earlier! It is not as strong in the clamping area as yours and is only 450mm wide. This one was built without drawings, just from memory of a large one we had where I used...

    condensers

Quite correct, almost. I agree entirely about the voltage ratings but I admit to not knowing exactly what they should be for ignition use. However they are not electrolytic type as that type of capacitor is polarity sensitive and cannot have reversed voltage applied to it. As far as the...

Rhombic stirling... any one seen this?

This one was in Model Engineer, Sept 30, 2005. The displacer cylinder and displacer are of thin-wall stainless. These came from some of those el-cheapo solar garden lights, I was lucky enough to find a couple of sizes that ran nicely inside one another with about the right clearance. The power...

    Wooden it just!

The advantage this gent has is that he collects all his supplies from the roadside as a result of things like fence replacements etc. So everything is pretty much recycled as well. I should also add, without his permission, that he is over 70 years old! (not that that is a bad thing) Ian.
