    Scrap Yard Bummer

Today was suddenly a real bummer, when I visited my favorite scrap yard to have a nose around the brass area. I spotted some nice HSS tooling and picked out a few items. I then weighed the lot and approached the cashier's window. When I asked what they were charging for HSS, I was informed they...

Hot, humid weather conditions. (related to engine running)

George I've encountered the same thing with the little Victorian engine. High humidity makes it quite temperamental and requires a whole different carb adjustment to get it to start and run. It likes drier, colder air much better and proves it by running a whole lot smoother across a wider range...

    Gingery Metal shaper

We always called this technique "Pre-cussing". It was sort of like getting a running start to the main event on any really tough job....LOL Steve

    Exhibitionist ??

You've also got to consider that it's rather a short show and time will become the great enemy. No fun for anyone if the project isn't finished before about noon on Sunday, when the packing has already begun. Steve

    Exhibitionist ??

I'd totally avoid the "man off the street" idea. Even a single small injury could have serious repercussions, both to the sponsor and the Cabin Fever show. Cabin Fever would probably require a release from any liability, even if seasoned machinists are the stars. Steve

This gandy dancer is a machine

Had the pleasure a few years ago of seeing the last of the Southern Railway Gandy dancers at work. Tough job and even tougher men with a proud working heritage. Sad day, that.... as they finished up their last mile of track before being mothballed into retirement. I only hope someone somewhere...

    Bogs goes electronic.

John Glad to hear the stimulation unit worked for you. It isn't a magic bullet and it won't reverse the root cause, but back when I used mine, it was all I had between me sitting at home counting wall spots and doing a day's work. Once you've learned to dial it in properly, you'll find you can...

    A BEAM ENGINE

A covered walkway to my shop

John Good luck with the Tens unit. I used one for several years to treat residual problems from a broken back, during my 20's. I still have some reminders of that event, some 30 years later. The Tens unit kept me going and the pain at a lower roar than it could have been. Glad to hear Mal is...

    A rather special day

John Sad to hear he wasn't chosen, but even in disappointments there is valuable experience. It won't be his last, but learning early to handle it is a high value lesson all by itself. He'll get em next round.... Steve

Tandem Compound Poppet Valve Steam Engine Build, ala Cedge

Gentlemen It is with great consternation that I post this. This thread is being put on hold for the time being. A series of health issues have sort of cascaded on me since early June, taking me out of the shop for safety reasons. None of the issues are life threatening but it does require me to...

Something you may not have known

Those two processes might eventually work, but a Duclos Victorian IC engine will not start backwards even after you've spun it over with a drill motor for three hours. It will, however flood it to the maximum....LOL. Note to self.......Check to see which direction your cordless drill is turning...

    Wire gage debate

Psssst.... Hey guys!! the original question was......"what size drill bit do I need for a M5 hole." I don't think he cares much about industry standards or measuring systems beyond getting a hole he can actually thread for....get this.... his home shop project. Steve

    Buying a CNC Mill

Idesign Since this is your first post, perhaps you'd care to enlighten us as to the specific problems you encountered, before carpet bombing the company. Quite honestly you came across sounding like a competitor... and a rather bad one at that. Steve

Not All Slide Valves Are Equal

Trout I own a Dual Cylinder Tangye engine that nearly drove me to drink for the same reason. The valve shoe was lifting off the surface and letting air flow freely to the exhaust. After many times taking it apart and putting it back together, I noticed that the slide valve rod was being forced...

Grinding on the Side of the Wheel?

Saw a wheel explode once, when a know it all "fabricator" ignored a second warning to stop grinding on the side of the wheel of an old bench grinder. The guards were made of some kind of cast material and shattered when the wheel went "BANG" . It didn't kill the guy, but only because the guard...

    popular science mystery engine

Geoffery There is a lurking member on this board who isn't comfortable posting, but I've seen his work and it's prety incredible. He builds his engines with only a lathe and drill press and odds and ends he has laying about. Parts from sewing machines, reel type lawnmowers, even gears from an...
