    Powder paint for model engines

Some of the internet items I have read about powder painting suggest that everything to be powder painted should be sandblasted first. The Rupnow fortune won't stand another hit right now, but I have found an interesting video. I already have a large air compressor and a quart size hand held...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Jason--I may be having a total mind fart here, but I've been messing around with cam angles all afternoon and I simply can not see how 102 degrees lobe separation on the cams can work. If the inlet valve begins to open when the piston is 15 degrees before top dead center, and the exhaust valve...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I couldn't let the entire day go by without doing something.----So----I milled grooves in the cylinder heads to clear the pushrods. You can't see what I have done, because the grooves are hidden by the pushrods. I can slide a piece of printer paper between the heads and the pushrods without it...

Sid--There is one hobby shop in Barrie. I will ask them on Monday.---Brian

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Thanks Scott--No work today---All my aches and pains have caught up to me today, and I'm hobbling around like somebody's old granny. I still have to cut some clearance grooves in the cylinder heads to clear the pushrods, and time the cams. I called my nut and bolt guys yesterday and they don't...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Today, it didn't take too much to wear me out. I drilled and tapped the engine sub base to hold a condenser for my ignition, drilled and tapped my starter mechanism top plate for the Upshur engine bolt pattern, milled a keyway in the crankshaft and cut a keyway in my flywheel. That doesn't sound...

    Powder paint for model engines

Yesterday, my powder paint supplies from Eastwood in California arrived. Everything I ordered is there, very well packed in a cardboard carton.---I purchased a large toaster oven locally, as well as N95 paint masks and vinyl gloves. I dug around in my cabinets and found a good i.r. temperature...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Today was kind of a write off type day. I went for my last physio appointment and was told that I had "progressed nicely" and didn't need any more physio appointments. I had it confirmed by another source that the angle between the two cams is indeed 105 degrees on this engine. I set the...

Gordon---thank you so much. I will use that timing diagram to set my cams.---Brian

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I have reached a point on this engine, where mechanically it is finished and ready to run. I still have to sort out the distributor but I don't see that as a major problem. I blew up the digital copy I have of the engine plans, and you are right---the cams are not at 90 degrees as I thought...

Without a word of exaggeration, Permatex Form a Gasket is the most evil **** I have ever worked with. It does the job, but it's on my engine, my hands, my shirt, my tools and probably in places I haven't even looked yet!!!

I remove the burrs before running the engine. All the pictures I have posted are in progress " shots of the build.--Brian

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Gordon---Thank you.--And---speaking of timing---I want this engine to turn clockwise when viewed from the "non carburetor side". (This is opposite to what Upshur plan calls for). I am making an assumption here. Since the cylinders are exactly opposite one and other, then wouldn't the two cams...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I followed most of the plans. Some of the stuff I changed a bit, but 99% followed the plans. The plans are very well done, and I wouldn't throw stones at Upshur for anything I have found a bit fishy. ----Brian

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

If you look closely you will see that one of the valve tappets is very close to the hub of the large gear.--it actually was too close. It hung up on the hub of the gear rather than following the cam like it was meant to. This meant removing the gear, drilling new set screw holes closer to the...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

These two rather horrible little parts are "oil slingers" which bolt to the underside of the con rod caps and sling oil all over the inside of the crankcase when the engine is running. They are horrible because non of my machinery is really intended to make parts this small. So, by default...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

HAH!!!---Milestone day today.--I drove my truck for the first time since my knee surgery. Needed a couple of new hex wrenches, so drove to my nearest tool supplier and purchased them. Wasn't any problem driving,---hardest part was getting my gimpy old arse up into the truck seat. My truck sets...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

A little change in the game plan this afternoon. I had assembled my valve cages, valves, valve springs and spring retainers a couple of weeks ago, and at that time I thought--"Jeez, there isn't much movement in those valves before the top spring retainer hits the valve cage and won't move any...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Okay, the fix is in. I had to make a new con rod and cap, watched my dimensions much more closely, and the rod fits in now and the engine will rotate thru 360 degrees. It does clear now---not by very darn much, but a miss is as good as a mile. I'm stiff and sore today from so much playing...

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

I haven't timed the engine yet. I don't know if when the engine is timed the cam will be in a position to be hit by the con rod or not. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and it is supposed to clear anyways.
