    Brian's Donkey Engine

Brian It's a lot easier to "flip" and "flop" in SolidWorks than it is on Craftex. Thats the beauty of 3D design. Jerry

    February Project of the Month

Congratulations Stew   That is a great project. Entertaining, enlightening . . . and a bit intimidating. When I first saw the post, I ordered a piece of cast iron bar for the X-head guide. As it turns out, the flywheel is the bigger challenge. I haven't found the courage to get...

    Split Eccentric

Boy! That was easy! I waste more time worrying about the unknown than doing it and moving ahead. Since I don't have any #2 cheese head screwa I used Socket Head Capscrews and there is just enough room in a 5/8" eccentric. I put the clamp screw heads in the small half and had room for a #8-32...

    Split Eccentric

It looks like I have plenty of room for two #2-56 SHCS in an eccentric with 5/8" diameter and .100" throw. Jerry

    Brian's Donkey Engine

Brian I hope you don't mind all of the advice, but if you proceed with the latest plan, you will have limited the machine to a single drum. To power a front drum, the pinion/crankshaft has to be in front of the main drum. I don't think you need to worry about removing the steam chest...

    Brian's Donkey Engine

Brian That looks good. You might think about reducing the drum spool diameter and making the flanges straight sided. Drum capacity was a factor where the log haul was very long. Wooden lagging staves could be added to the drum to increase the line speed if desired. Straight flanges make that...

    Building Jerry's Donkey

Brian Thanks for the heads up. There is no need for these to be protected. That must have happened when I wasn't looking. Photobook has done that before. I will remove the protection if I can figure out how. 20576 Jerry

    Split Eccentric

Thanks for all of the really useful replies. I now have a plan of action. I wanted to make split eccentrics, just because it seems like the right thing, but as Tel said, its risky. So the first part of this project will be a pair of split eccentrics, using the methods shown by Robin and Stuart...

    Brian's Donkey Engine

Brian The answer is "yes". The pinion gear engages both big drum shaft gears so both drum shafts are turning anytime that the engine is running. Either or both of the rope drums can be engaged by the operator. A lot of skill and coordination required. Jerry

    Brian's Donkey Engine

Brian Not upset at all. I am surprised that more people have not built one of these fascinating machines! They are a great part of North American history. Logging, mining, shipping, and any type of material handling adopted these versatile tools. They were the antecedent of the donkey but they...

    Split Eccentric

I think my next major project is going to be an engine that was not built in the late 1880's even though it could have been and maybe should have been. Those were great times for steam engines. Lots of visible action. simple mechanical principles, and form was at least as important as function...

    Brian's Donkey Engine

Brian This will be interesting, to you and the rest of us watching. I watched the video that you linked to and it is a simple looking machine. Its not clear how this particular one was used but it helps illustrate some of the history of these machines. I don't know who the manufacturer was but...

    Building Jerry's Donkey

Brian This project is packed away in a drawer, waiting for an increase in skills. It was my first attempt to build a model to scale. Up till then, I had just built little machines that worked. There is a big difference. I found that there were some parts that would be needed that I had no clue...

    Brass Globe Valves

OOP! My bad. These things aren't all that reliable. The first couple of valves that I built worked just fine so I was fooled by success. When I finished the batch of five, three of them leaked badly. So back to the drawing board. The problem seemed to be in sealing the valve insert in the valve...

    Six Shooter Elbow Engine

Ken   Congratulations on a successful test. I think you got it licked!. Slow running, reversing, no flywheel, are all signs of a good design, well executed. You didn't make it real clear but it sounds like you also resolved the oil slinging? A flywheel, while not really needed, will...

    Brass Globe Valves

Ralph Thanks for the compliment. Yes I will show the handwheel at the end of this thread, after the valve stem. Today's project was to build five valve inserts to go with the valve bodies from yesterday. I have come to understand that it is much harder to build 5 pieces at one time than it is...

    Brass Globe Valves

Here is a revised view of the valve. I realized last night that the orientation of the flats on the flanges was shown incorrectly in the previous illustrations. This is a 3D PDF that you can rotate and view from different angles if viewed with Adobe 9.4 or later. When you open the file, "Click...
