Look on ebay for lapidary powder (stone tumbling/polishing) it is not expensive you only need buy very small amounts $5 for 50grams inc shipping will last a lifetime. Also the woodworking guys use it for lapping tools. Ideally work through the grits as I showed in the link to my Firefly...

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

Considerable savings can be made if you just buy a few separate castings and then supply your own materials for the rest. You can also make them your own by adding extra detail etc. These are my versions of their Real and James Combes, I used their cylinder casting and the Real also has their...

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

Unfortunately not though there would be quite a few takers if they did but talking with them they have no plans to bring any of the old obsolete kits back to the market:(

A couple of twists of wire would do the job and look less cumbersome or bend your own from spring wire.

    Jekyll's Pendulous Engine c 1870

I first became aware of this engine when I saw it listed in a Bonham's auction and saved the photos and description. A few years later I have finally got round to making it. The original large model has a bore of 1.5" and stroke of 4.5" I scaled it to suit a flywheel of 200mm diameter as that...

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

They did do small fractional horse power Ic engines as well as some larger often marine IC engines. This is their 1/4HP small power engine that could have been hooked up to a dynamo. 8-9" flywheels

They made bigger engines too for generating, the recent enclosed engine thread has some examples. The wartime one was just to charge batteries for communication.

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

The good thing with having the basic model in CAD is that it is only a few clicks to make it any scale you like. from there you can go whatever way you want be that home patterns & casting, your own patterns cast by a third party or cut from solid/fabricate. And nothing to say you cant mix and...

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

Well if you have seen the guy who owns Bridport (Stuarts) then he would be quite happy to tuck one of those large ones under each arm and not break into a sweat! The other downside of big engines for many is the size of machines needed. I had quite a long chat with one of the other supplier who...

The difference is that the large Myers offerings look right. That is due to them having been scaled down from real full size engines. The Stuarts have been scaled up from small freelance engines were originally designed for ease of casting and machining. I'm almost certain those large Stuarts...

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

I thought the opposite. Simply scaling up the very basic 10 V & H designs does not really work you end up with a chunky and clumsy engine. For example they still have the "extruded" profile bearings and simple one piece eccentric strap. At the very least on an engine of that size you want split...

A couple of engines for GreenTwin

I know Greentwin has said he does not like making small engines and when I saw these yesterday on the Stuart stand I thought of him, start saving now💲💲💲💲 About a 14" flywheel Also a double size Otto on another stand

Have a read of this thread of mine starting with machining the cylinder, it then goes onto lapping it, making the piston and lapping the piston into the cylinder. This is what I do for IC engines with no rings. https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/topic/jasons-firefly-46-build/#post-93931

    Upshur's opposed twin engine

Brian, you might want to slightly dome the ends of the two bits of threaded rod too so that the rotor arm slides smoothly over them, if it is catching on an edge that may be what is stopping rotation and causing the gear to slip on the shaft

    Annealing gray iron castings

The graph is a good one for annealing if you want strength as it converts the hard carbides to perlite and graphite, if continued down to 240deg C @ 100deg/hr will give a nicer to machine iron rather than a strong one. Leaving it too cool in the oven as you do overnight may have a similar affect...

    Shows keep getting smaller!

We usually have people using lathes and sometimes a mill at shows and they do at least on one of the stands let children have a go on them. see half way down page 8. The design has been brought upto date with metric sizes as anyone new to the hobby in the UK is likely to have spent their live...

You use a hone for honing and a lap for lapping. Quite a few choices such a scommercial laps as linked to above, you can make your own expanding lap from aluminium or copper and charge it with various grades of silicon carbide powder mixed with oil to form a thin paste. Don't use automotive...
