I just spoke with the folks at Online Metals and they confirmed that they ship to Australia.

I have also spoken with McMaster and they are investigating, assuming they would ship 3, 1 ft pieces of 1" 1144 rod to Sydney (if you DM me your address and the size you need I can provide that to them for a more detailed answer).

In either case, I suggest shipping 1 ft lengths to keep the shipping down: longer lengths cost less per foot, but the shipping difference usually wipes out any savings.

I suspect it will also be on a slow cargo ship--3 months.

@DiegoVV

McMaster said they will not be able to ship. If you DM me your contact info and the size & quantity you want I will get a quote from UPS if I were to have shipped to me and then on to you. However, I think the best alternative will be for you to work directly with Online Metals.

In the Philippines there are "balik bayan" boxes that get shipt for about $100US. The weight does not matter. I thimpfk there are several companies that will do that including LBC.

I hope it's a good beer rather than that pee water that is passt off as beer. I like dark beer.
Unlike the newer newer territories, we here in the Original Colonies know how to brew; I prefer Lager; yes, around here it is capitalized, as there is only one:

PM me and I'll send you my address so's you can send me a case to test. ANYTHINBG has got to be better than the peewater that is overhyped from advertising.

I noticed this thread a bit late, but anyway: for high strength combined with low internal stresses and very good machinebility we prefer the Swiss made special steel ETG100 or ETG 80. Excellent for gears, spindles, crankshafts and the like; in general components that undergo lots of machining and that you want to get out strong and straight, with a very good surface finish. You may want to check the availability near you.

Hi fellow members,

For the crankshaft of my next project (An Offy 270), the plans asks for 1144 to make the crankshaft. I understand that this steel combines great machineability with low internal stress that will help in keeping it straight when removing large amounts of material.

The problem is that I don´t seem to find the equivalence of 1144 in the European standards. Does any colleague from the old side of the world have any suggestion?

Thank you all!
I would look at 1045 or 1030 steel. Note they use different numbers.
Basically it is 0.45 or 0.30 carbon steel . They may add lead Manganese. , Phosphorus, and or Sulfur to make it free machining and stronger too.
Note adding Manganese, Phosphorus, and or Sulfur makes more difficult to weld.

At time time I had a chart for world steel.

Mid or A36 is not the best but if you use high rake angle it will
make it easier to machine.

Most of my machine stock is 1144 or 12L14.

The other problem is most countries do not have a large selection.
They are more interested in welding not speed of manufacturing.

Since it doesn’t appear that there is an equivalent, why not buy some 1144 and have it shipped?
Whenever possible, I try tovsource my stock locally...it's cheaper and faster...In particular talking about 1144, I resist to think that stressproff steel can only be found in the US.

Just did a search on eBay Aus and all of the listings were from the U.S. (and Wow the shipping is high!). However, when I was checking out one of the listings, this came up as a suggestion:

I’d suggest messaging this Seller via eBay to see what they have that would work for your application.

That doesn’t mean that they’re not any suppliers in Australia, but a number of reasonably larger steel companies sell on eBay US
