I'm looking for a source of IEC frame electric motors in the USA. These motors commonly come on import machinery. I'd like to see what's available as a lathe motor replacement, 1 hp, single phase, 115V, 1725 rpm IEC frame size D80.

Cheers,
Phil

They are available, but not common. I bought an IEC 100 by Allen Bradley off Ebay. One retail place I looked at was toolmex.com.

You might want to try Electric Motor Wholesale www.electricmotorwholesale.com. Check out the line of Leeson Metric motors. I recently retrofitted my mill with a 3HP unit in an IEC-90 frame. Electric Motor Wholesale had the motor in stock and delivered quickly.

Dont replace it with a single phase motor- get a 3 phase and a VFD and have variable speed. Once you get one you will never go back to single speed again. And it wont cost much more money.

Thanks guys for the responses. Looks like I have some good options here.

I would second RonGinger's suggestion. I put 3 phase motors on both my lathe and mill with variable speed controllers. The soft start alone is a joy to use.

A 3 phase VFD is probably the best option. IEC motors that are single phase/115 V in the USA are pricing out at $500 - $700 unless I go with the OEM motor for about $300. I'll let you know how this all works out.

You can buy a 1HP 3 Phase 220V for about $50 plus shipping at a surplus place.
A new VFD is about $130.

I did the VFD conversion and would never go back to moving belts, which I still have as option for extra torque or extra RPM for those special cases. But 99% of my machining is covered by one belt.

I can change speed while facing or unscrew the chuck under power at 30 RPM using the JOG function.
