heres a little thought i had on ic engines

a young lad down our street has one of those nitro fuelled radio controlled cars and loves it to bits and always plays with it in the courtyard at the back of our houses i dont have a problem with this but my missus does as after half 7 when my daughter goes to bed it keeps her awake and we all know what a tired stressed out 2 year old is like and afterf the missus declairing war on the kids dad for letting him play with it i decided to poke my ore in
wondering about what to do about it i knew getting him 2 play somewhere else with it was impossible and soundproofing the house isnt an option i went to see the kids dad and explained what i do so he decided to let me borrow the car overnight
i came up with a micro silencer with baffles and evrything machined from aluminium bar and a few other bits and bobs and tested it on the car somewhere around 5am the next morning on the street and compared to how loud the car was before hand i reaccon ive cut its noise level down by as much as 70% without impeeding the cars performance at all
wich got me thinking is there a market out there for such a gizmo or is it one of those crazy ideas that just wont take off ie: is it worth following up on this silencer or not
and you should have seen the little lads face when he saw that he had a propper custom exhaust system fitted and a working tailpipe on his little subaru imprezza car it made that night in the shed all the more worthwile and the neighbours have dubbed me the mas scientist for it

That's a neat project, John, and a neighborly way to keep the peace, too!
I have no interest in the cars you're talking about, so know nothing about the market for mufflers.
Maybe you should have a nose about the local hobby stores and see what's on offer.

That was a neat and gentlemanly thing you did there John, in order to preserve the peace and quiet your 2 year old deserves. ASA a market for such devices? Eh, I doubt it very much. You see I believe that is part of the allure of said vehicles, THE NOISE!!!!!! YEAHHHHH BABY! that is what is in the mind of the demographic majority these vehicles are sold to. Unfortunately, keeping the noise level down to under that of a jet plane engine, just isn't any fun to these types. Another case in point would be an ever increasing number of vehicles that have had the "fart can" mufflers installed on them or the motorcycle screwballs of the world that believe it is their God given right to declare where it is they are and are heading to anyone in a 2 mile radius. Now if you could just come up with a device that would completely block out all such noises, the line to buy would be out the door and down the street.

Over the years.noise has been a major problem for aeromodeling clubs and a lot of flying fields have been lost because of it (in N.S.W.Australia).Although mufflers are available.I dont think they are all that efficient,so maybe there is a market there as well as for cars and boats.

I congratulate you for helping that young lad keep his interest.as over the years I have seen young aero modelers go into the aviation industry.

It is a pitty our passion for making models isn't being passed on to the younger generation instead of just knocking them.

I just thought of a way to make it a sure fire seller. Don't tell 'em it's a muffler/silencer. Say it's
an expansion chamber that increases power and top speed! That should do it. Make it do what you
want, make the packaging say what they want.
You don't even have to send me a cut of the profits. Peace and quiet is its own reward.

funny you should mention the belief of its their god given right to create noise and db readings through the roof i got my original idea when i was about 19 and had the privelage of createing a super loud sports exhaust for my first car i just copied the design and made it a lot smaller and got completely the opposite effect not bad to say i just wanted to make my car louder hee hee

;D ;D I remember as a child my dad removed the clickers from all the neighborhood Big Wheels (a plastic tricycle; see here for those that never had 'em, very popular in the 70's) on the grounds it made them 'go faster'. The kids bought it too.

Make a couple for the same engine and put it under the glass case at the local hobby shop with a picture of the boys completed car.....some of these people will pay all kinds of silly money for the latest fad gadget....and it it makes the model sound more like a real car...so much the better!......what have ya got to lose?

Could be a nice side line for a while.

and on the subject of silenceing noisy car stereoes my brother and i silenced some deaf twots stereo good and propper one night by sneaking out in the middle of the night and filling the boot (trunk) of this lads car with water useing his mums hosepipe through the back lights thus destroying the amplifyers and speakers it cost him a fortune and he kept it a lot quieter ever since job done

John : Go for it make up a few and market them. After all ,heat is energy. Sound is energy and energy makes the car go .so the less sound produced the smaller amount of energy wasted therefore more energy to the wheels . so you have invented a performance exhaust system.

Nice thought Dean. It might work just work. But remember there is always that odd one out there that will put one of these on a dyno to see if it really gives more power. :

on the subject of dyno testing i tried it on my shill disc saw and it was considerably quieter than without and didnt make any difference to the performance of the engine exept made it run a little smoother and quicker on the uptake but made no difference to the flat out speed

I am assuming it is a 2-stroke. For any engine you have to do 2 things to get it to run faster with more power. You have to get air/fuel into the engine and Exhaust out. On a 2-stroke the air in usually requires a little polishing and a larger bore carb, as that lets the air in easier. Your disc saw is probably limited by the amount of air it can suck in.
