As the topic states, I am interested in seeing how others added DRO to their mini mills.

This is how I did it,works fine, used thin mounting strips to give the scales a bit of spring.works a treat and I would't be with out them.

Dennis,
How do you like those scales ? I was looking at them but read mixed reviews.

They have been working like a champ for me. No problems whatsoever. Been using them for, I dunno, 8 or 9 months now maybe. Haven't had to change the batteries yet, haven't had an inaccurate milling cut/drill because of them and they sure as heck do save me a whole lotta time. How can you go wrong with $22 for the small ones and about twice that for the longer?

I'm sure a $600 DRO is better but it dang well should be that much money. Besides, why pay more for a DRO than you paid for the mill? Makes no sense. So considering the cost and ease of installment, there is no downside, despite what you might hear. My opinion.

i have the smaller one of these DRO, just one

is work well but i guess is just luck to get a perfect unit or a, lets say, half good one

the one i have is a 6", buy from Grizzly, works good, but in the short time i have used (just a couple of hours like max) it turn on alone, and lose the zero reading, that pass me a few times, at first, i believe that the vibrations from the machine was causing the batteries to move and disconnecting, causing a reset to the unit

but soon figured out that te vibration was not the problem, the batteries are hold tight in the slots, and the DRO turn on without running the machine or machining.

other thing that happens (not more) is that the display got freeze, measuring nothing, i have to take out the batteries for 30 sec to fix that.

i only have used for a couple of hours, but all that problems that shows in the begining, now seems to be right.

i have to remark that im using the DRO with the batteries that come in the box, four identical batteries were supplied, so im using two of these

i do not discart the posibility that these batteries maybe are not the best, or come semi charged, or discharged, maybe that was causing my DRO to not function properly. is higly probable, but i do not have a way to prove (i dont have others batteries that fix the unit, besides the other two that come in the box)

but are people that this DRO is working great, and some other like i, i suppose, that are still evaluating this unit. maybe just luck

i hope that this comment would help

Saludos

I did receive one unit that had a loose connector socket where the cable plugs into the readout. I took it apart and noticed the solder did not wick up onto the socket housing. I documented this: http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=9163.0

Anyone buying this brand of DRO would do well to open and check the PCB for cold solder joints. I opened my other DRO's to peek at the soldering and they were OK. Quality control here is inconsistent for sure. I fixed the one DRO but notified Grizzly about it and they sent me a new one which I am keeping as a spare just in case. Haven't needed it yet.

Hi

I have fitted the same sort of DRO to both my mills, the X1 and the X3. The following link will take you to a detailed description of fitting to the X1.

You will notice I have fitted the remote readouts, they really do make a big difference and well worth the extra outlay

Cheers
