I've got a portass model s lathe that I'm trying to fix up and use but the motor is not engaging with the pully. When I have looked inside the pully wheel that connects to the motor there is some rubber inside that I think should squash onto The motor and there for run. Does anyone know where I could get a replacement rubber in the UK or a way to fix it thanKS guys

Pictures might help here. You know the old saying a picture is worth a thousand words.

As for reconditioning this lathe, sometimes it is helpful to take a modern approach and replace older parts with new technology. In any event it almost sounds like you are describing some sort of clutch type mechanism. This could be an after market solution or original to the lathe, I have no way to know for sure.

Here are some pics of how the pully wheel attached to the motor

From the looks of the photos, you need to strip down and find out whatgoes where.Give it good clean and refurb /replace badly worn parts.Would be an
interesting excercise, made easier with a working and mill

Just a suggestion, but if the pulley is meant to have a rubber inner, then maybe O rings of the correct size would be a suitable replacement. I'm a little confused by it to be honest I thought that ideally you would want drive direct from the motor to pulley. Unless this is some form of clutch mechanism to engage and disengage the motor drop. But that is already present on the machine with the handle to slacken the lay shaft for changing speeds.

I will say your lathe looks a lot like mine in that it needs a good clean up, (possibly a paint), and a few issues, but all present.

Yes I have given it a bit of a paint and have started to clean it up this is how I got it set up and think it is some sort of clutch. I'm enjoying learning everything about the machine

That rubber clutch could be a fail safe should you crash a cutter. If it was my lathe I would scrap the old motor and get a modern replacement with a new V belt and pulley.

Ever after check that the chuck doesn't hit anything before you start up and then take small cuts. Old lathes can still do useful work just a little slower like some of us.

Thanks for the reply I think I will end up doing that I'm loving learning about this lathe and getting it back up and running just waiting on a reply from the lathe website to try and date it

Yes it's a clutch , usually foot pedal operated , avoids stopping and starting the lathe motor during production runs.
A very similar motor/clutch was fitted to Pultra lathes and these often come up on Ebay.
Dan.

Im all for ditching the clutch and that pathetic belt. Im not sure what the driven end pulley is, but if easily replaced id convert over to Poly-V belts and pulleys. If the budget is capable go with a 3 phase motor and a VFD.
